Yearly Storm Spotter Training pays off By Daniel Wilson, Chief Forecaster Storm Alert Center On behalf of the citizens of Russell County and the Storm Alert Center, we want to extend a personal thanks to the Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department and Adair Weather Command for spotting the funnel cloud that eventually did major damage in the Eli and Gosser Ridge Communities of eastern Russell County. For several years, we have held storm spotter training and Friday night, this paid off. The Storm Alert Center was in direct communication with spotters and we were able to relay that information to our followers, allowing people to take shelter. Pulaski Co. cleanup and repair continues following storms From Amber Hale Somerset, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District Eight Office is continuing cleanup efforts in the aftermath of a powerful storm system that swept through Pulaski County overnight Friday. While crews have made progress in clearing debris, the storm's damage remains extensive, and roadways, including a portion of U.S. 27 in Somerset, are still closed. Motorists should expect delays and allow for additional travel time, particularly for the Monday morning commute. Joel Hinkle, 74, Russell County, KY Joel Steven Hinkle, of Jamestown, passed away Friday, May 16, 2025, at his home. He was 74 years of age. Born November 11, 1950, he was a son of the late Roy and Juanita Eddington Hinkle. Joel previously worked at Fruit of the Loom and was a United States Army Vietnam Veteran, having earned the National Defense Service and the Good Conduct Medals. He honorably served as a volunteer firefighter for over thirty years in Fayetteville, North Carolina and Russell Springs; and served as the Assistant Fire Chief for the Jamestown Fire Department. Joel also worked as a 911 Dispatcher, Deputy Coroner, and Emergency Medical Technician. There was no doubt that he loved his community, as this was evident in his service to them. Joel was a former member and Sunday School Superintendent at Free Union Separate Baptist Church and a current member and Assistant Superintendent at Green River Valley Separate Baptist Church. Joel was most proud of his family and always made time for them; he was known to say that they were his world. Joel enjoyed hunting and fishing.
