WKU Mesonet at WKU adds station in Green County

Kentucky Mesonet - a vast network of fully-automated weather and climate monitoring stations - celebrated not one but two milestones Friday morning, the ribbon cutting at station number 80 in southern Green County and the 75th county in Kentucky to include at least one Mesonet site.

The Green County Mesonet station, which first appeared online in October, consists of a 33-foot tower with weather-measuring instrumentation that measures air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind speed and direction, air pressure, as well as solar radiation. In addition, the site includes probes that collect soil moisture and soil temperature.

Land for the site was donated by Thomas and Chasity Price.

Jennings inspiring others at downtown business

From Cheryl Meadows
Southeast Kentucky Economic Development Corporation

It's Alexis Jennings' dream to help others see their dreams come true. As the owner of 313maple Florist & Events, she's done that with a welcome flair in downtown Columbia, Kentucky.

However, her most recent plans to purchase a nearby building, expand the unique downtown floral shop and event space, and reach more clients have taken time. They have required input from women and leaders she trusts and the professional support of some of the region's most effective business and economic development organizations.

Jennings has operated the floral and event business in a leased building on the historic Columbia Square since 2017. Oh, the fun she is having doing it! In 2025, she wanted to move into a more prominent, strategic location, allowing for expanded operations and creating a more inviting atmosphere, hoping to increase foot traffic and sales. The new location spans approximately 6,000 square feet across three levels, providing ample space for retail, floral design, workshops, and event rentals.

"The success of a small business isn't just about profits -it's about passion, perseverance, and building relationships that turn customers into a community," Jennings said.

At this new location, 212 Public Square, Jennings hopes to become the go-to provider for local events and continue her "not your ordinary" floral services in downtown Columbia.

LWC: Honors students take victory lap at Spring Symposium

From Duane Bonifer

An inability to control the spread of AIDS in West Africa, dying of a broken heart, a 17th century plague in an English town and the impact of a late-19th century British novel were among the topics presented on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at the 2025 Spring Symposium of the Lindsey Wilson College R.V. Bennett Honors Program.

The academic event spotlighted the breadth and depth of 13 students' research on 15 semester-long projects, which was made possible by working under the close guidance of a faculty mentor.

"I like to think about this day as a kind of victory lap for our students," said psychology professor Jordan Greenburg, who is also acting director of the R.V. Bennett Honors Program. "Our students have been working all semester on their projects with a professor, and they have put in so much time and so much effort into their projects. And now they get a chance to kind of show off what they've done."

And show off is what the students did at the all-day event, held in the Lindsey Wilson Honors House. Topics presented covered the areas of science and health, biology and medical sciences, history and culture, expression, and advocacy and application.

KDFW reminds the public to leave baby wildlife alone

From Hilary Hirtle

Frankfort, KY - With spring in full swing, more people are encountering young wildlife as they venture outdoors. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is reminding the public to avoid interfering with young wildlife, even if they seem to be alone. While these animals may appear vulnerable, the mother is likely nearby.

"It's common for wildlife rehabilitators to receive animals that are thought to be orphans. In reality, they were fine before someone with good intentions stepped in, trying to help in the wrong way," said Dr. Christine Casey, wildlife veterinarian with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife.

Spring is a busy time for many species. Rabbits start nesting as early as February and continue throughout the summer, with mothers returning to the den at dawn and dusk to feed their young. Newly hatched songbirds are often seen on the ground, learning to fly. By April, mother black bears and their cubs have emerged from their dens, with cubs growing more active and exploring their surroundings. Late spring marks the peak of deer fawning season, during which fawns often stay motionless and hidden for their first month of life, only beginning to follow their mothers once they are strong enough.

"Wildlife parents will often leave their young in a safe spot while they go off to find food, sometimes even in places that are more developed because they know their offspring will be safe there. Almost always, the parent is nearby and will come back to take care of them," Casey said.

People can help young wildlife thrive by:
