A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Saturday morning at the opening of New Beginnings, a new consignment shop on Campbellsville Street in Columbia. Keep 2 lights on Friday for start of celebration

The Kentucky Historical Society and America250KY will host the official state lighting of Two Lights for Tomorrow, a nationwide moment to kick-start the celebration of the 250th birthday of the United States of America. The event will be held on Friday, April 18, at 8pmET at the Old State Capitol in Frankfort.

In April 1775, Paul Revere embarked on his famous midnight ride on horseback to alert the colonists after spotting a two-light signal in the Old North Church in Boston. This signal indicated that British troops were approaching by water, marking the beginning of the American Revolutionary War.

Tommy Darrell Wright, 58, Green County, KY

Tommy Darrell Wright of Greensburg, Kentucky, son of the late Herbert Wright and his surviving mother, Bonnie Houk Wright of Greensburg, was born on Wednesday, February 8, 1967 in Taylor County and departed this life of Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at Baptist Health Hardin. He was 58 years, 2 months, and 7 days of age.

Jim Sidebottom, 79, Green County, KY

Paul "Jim" Sidebottom of Summersville, Kentucky, born May 18, 1945 in the house built by his 3rd great-grandparents on the family farm, passed away on April 15, 2025 at Baptist Health Hardin. He was 79 years of age.

Jim was the son of Loy and Maudie Jones Sidebottom, a graduate of Green County High School, and attendee of Campbellsville College. Having said, farm boys needed to find trainable city girls because farm girls already knew how hard farming could be, he found one of his own in 1967.

The 4-H Dog Club will have its next meeting at 5:30pmCT on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. The meeting will be held at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service located at 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY.

If you have an interest in dogs and want to learn all about dogs, this is the club for you. New members are welcome to attend. No dogs are to be brought to this meeting.

Kathleen Driskell named as next Kentucky Poet Laureate

Frankfort, KY - On April 17, 2025, during the Team Kentucky Update, Gov. Andy Beshear joined Kentucky Poet Laureate Silas House to announce the upcoming appointment of award-winning poet, essayist and teacher Kathleen Driskell as the 2025-26 Kentucky Poet Laureate.

"Team Kentucky is proud to announce that Kathleen will serve as our next Poet Laureate. She has made a real impact on the commonwealth's rich literary community through her poetry and passion for teaching," said Gov. Beshear. "Kentucky boasts a wealth of great literary talent, and we're fortunate to have Kathleen as a guiding voice, encouraging future writers and supporting Kentuckians in pursuing their dreams right here in our new Kentucky home."

Driskell, an Oldham County native, is the author of six poetry collections, most recently "Goat-Footed Gods," published by Carnegie Mellon University Press. Her other collections include "Blue Etiquette: Poems," a finalist for the Weatherford Award; "Next Door to the Dead," a Kentucky Voices selection from the University Press of Kentucky and winner of the Judy Gaines Young Book Award; and "Seed Across Snow," a Poetry Foundation national bestseller. With Katy Yocom, she edited the anthology "Creativity & Compassion: Spalding Writers Celebrate 20 Years."

Nellie Coleman, 90, Casey County, KY

Nellie Coleman, of Liberty, passed away Monday, April 14, 2025, at the Casey County Hospital. She was 90.

She was born October 22, 1934, in Casey County, KY to the late Asure C. and Bessie Ellis Miller. Nellie was a seamstress with Liberty Sportwear and Osh Kosh. She was a member of Walnut Hill Separate Baptist Church and enjoyed raising her grandkids.

Phyllis Enyeart, 78, Cumberland County, KY

Phyllis Enyeart, age 78 of Burkesville, KY passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at Cumberland Valley Manor. Phyllis was born on October 20, 1946 in Cumberland County, KY to the late Willie Arco Burns and Lillie Vincent Burns. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a son, Kenny Wayne Killman, a grandson, Jamison Burns and three siblings, Eugene Burns, Ricky Burns and Geneva Cash.

CACVFD provides mutual aid for Knifley fire

Columbia Adair County Fire Department

Columbia Adair County Fire Department was dispatched at 22:06 hours on Tuesday night, April 15, 2025, to 6047 Elkhorn Road to assist Knifley Area VFD on a report of a structure fire.

Upon arrival firefighters found a two story structure with heavy fire showing. Firefighters then conducted an offensive attack on this fire and after a good knockdown was made the fire was contained to the original structure.

There were 13 firefighters on scene for approximately 3 hours. No injuries were reported at the time of the incident.

Lindsey Wilson College holds Annual Honors Convocation

It was a day to celebrate academic achievements, scholarship and outstanding teaching in 2024-25 as members of the Lindsey Wilson College community celebrated the school's annual honors convocation on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, in Biggers Sports Center.

The more than 50 awards given included recognizing the top graduating students in Lindsey Wilson's six academic schools, students and organizations that went above and beyond the call of duty to serve the campus and larger community, and professors for their work with students.

The President's Award -- given annually to a member of the graduating classes -- was also named, and three new John B. Begley Scholars were announced. Lindsey Wilson's 121st commencement ceremony will be held in three parts: at 6pmCT Friday, May 2, 2025, and at 10amCT and at 2pmCT on Saturday, May 3, 2025, all at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY.

Congratulations to ACHS Junior Natalie Bardin, who has been elected to the position of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State President. She put together her campaign, did the hard work of communications and won!
