LWC English students present, connect at national conference

From Duane Bonifer

A group of Lindsey Wilson College students recently made a big impression on the national stage. The seven students were among a 10-member delegation from Lindsey Wilson that participated at the 2025 convention of Sigma Tau Delta, the international honor society for students of English, held March 19-22, 2025, in Pittsburgh.

The students and professors presented their work, sat on panels, and exchanged ideas with students and professors from other colleges and universities throughout the United States.

"I was so impressed and proud of all of our students, because not only did they do an amazing job presenting but they were also very impressive during the question-and-answer sessions," said Lindsey Wilson English professor Karolyn Steffens, one of three faculty members who attended the conference. "The Q&A is the unscripted part - you can't really prepare for that, because you don't know what kind of questions you're going to get. Our students blew that segment out of the park."

As a result, Steffens said the Lindsey Wilson students "consistently received some of the tougher questions from faculty members at the convention, because they saw the rigor of their argumentation."

April 7 Genealogy Meeting: Solomon Baker and His Long Rifle

From Mike Watson

Survival in the early years of settlement on the American continent was dependent upon the ability to protect one's self and family and to successfully hunt for food for the table. The long-rifle, as it became known, was the best and most accurate weapon to do both these vital tasks.

The Long-Hunters were some of the first to penetrate the dense forests of Kentucky Territory of Western Virginia and the long-rifle made the first trek with them. Makers of each unique firearm were prized citizens and much sought after. There were several gun makers in early Kentucky and their handiwork can still be seen in museums and private collections.

Early settlers in Adair County were impacted by the same needs and threats and the need for defense was just as real as ever.

Richard Phelps will bring this period of our history to life with a program on gun maker Solomon Baker of Adair County. Learn more about the influence of the Baker Rifle at the next meeting of the Adair County Genealogical Society at 5pmCT on Monday, April 7, 2025, at the Adair Genealogy & History Research Center, 307 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY.

LWC Business and Technology faculty study AI in coursework

From Duane Bonifer

Few topics are more divisive in higher education than the role of artificial intelligence in the academy.

That's what led three Lindsey Wilson College professors to study the role AI might play to increase and enhance student learning.

"In talking to students, especially international students, they say, 'We use it, but we use it to try to do better,'" said Helen MacLennan, who is a professor and dean of the Lindsey Wilson School of Graduate Business and Technology.

Along with fellow Lindsey Wilson business and technology professors Hermano De Queiroz and Charles Malka, MacLennan surveyed 157 students to better understand how they use AI in their work. De Queiroz and MacLennan presented their findings at the Society for Advancement of Management national conference, held in March in Tallahassee, Florida.
