Letter: Bugs biting Heather writes: Today my husband and I have both been bit by bugs that look like ladybugs while we were outside. I heard that ladybugs don't bite though. I was curious if anyone else had been bitten today, and if they know what type of bug or beetle it is.Have an answer? Teamwork, support key to LWC Swimming historic national finish From Duane Bonifer Small but mighty is a good way to describe the Lindsey Wilson College swimming program's recent historic performance at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships, held March 5-8 in Elkhart, Indiana. The Lindsey Wilson women's swimming team finished third in the nation, the best in program history, despite competing with one of the smaller qualifying teams at the national competition. During the four-day meet, the seven Blue Raider women who qualified for the national competition combined for six individual and relay national titles and received two national honors: a national title was earned in the 200-yard freestyle relay; graduate student Maaike Broersma of Bodegraven, Netherlands, won the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke; junior Kirsten de Goede of Durban, South Africa, won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle; Broersma was named NAIA Outstanding Swimmer for the second consecutive year; and Lindsey Wilson coach Alicia Kemnitz was named NAIA Women's Head Coach of the Year for the first time in her career. The Lindsey Wilson men's team also turned in an impressive performance during the four-day meet, which was held at the Beacon Health Elkhart Aquatic Center. The Blue Raider men, who finished seventh overall with seven swimmers, notched four individual All-American finishes on the final day of the meet and two All-American relay performances. A host of Lindsey Wilson program and national records, on the men's and women's side, were also set at the national meet. LWC alumni, faculty help students affected by floods Donate to help Lindsey students affected by the February floods at gofundme.com From Duane Bonifer Lovonne Fleming-Richardson knows firsthand what it is like to be the victim of flooding, and how long it can take to fully recover. Fleming-Richardson was out of her Pike County, Kentucky, home for 739 days following record flooding that swept through Eastern Kentucky in July 2022. Fleming-Richardson's home was spared in the floods caused by last month's heavy rains in the region, but she knows a lot of people who were not as fortunate. That's why Fleming-Richardson is among a group of Lindsey Wilson College faculty, staff, students and alumni who have established a GoFundMe account to assist Lindsey Wilson students affected by the floods. The floods especially affected Lindsey Wilson students who attend the college's extended campuses in Hazard, Kentucky, and Logan, West Virginia. The GoFundMe effort is raising money to help Lindsey Wilson students replace items they've lost in the floods, such as textbooks, computers and other school supplies. "I know the frustrations and the anger that people go through when something like this happens," said Fleming-Richardson, who graduated from Lindsey Wilson's graduate program in counseling and is the founder and chief operating officer of Appalachian Community Care.
