Chapel: Find Godly purpose in an ever-changing world

By Simon Baker, student news writer,
Office of University Communications

LaWanda Hazard encouraged Campbellsville University students to stay the course by continuing to serve Christ, even in a world filled with sin and distraction, and to never give up on their dreams.

Speaking at CU's chapel on Feb. 5, she began her message with some words of encouragement for students. Hazard reminded students that it is key to keep God first and to remember His plans are superior to theirs.

Swimming and community are a winning combination

By Duane Bonifer

Maaike Broersma and Kirsten de Goede have found the best of both worlds at Lindsey Wilson College - a nationally competitive swimming program and a welcoming and supportive campus community.

The two Blue Raiders were recently named Co-Women's Swimmer of the Year in the Mid-South Conference, and they are a big reason the Blue Raiders are one of the top-ranked collegiate swimming programs in the country as they prepare for the NAIA National Championships, which will be held March 5-8, 2025, in Elkhart, Indiana.

"Being co-swimmers of the year is just amazing. It's an amazing 'dub' for the 'L-Dub,'" said de Goede, referring to students' often-used nickname for Lindsey Wilson.

From Sharon Dodson
The Center for Rural Development

2024 Rogers Scholar J.T. Loy of Adair County organized a holiday toy drive for students served by the school's Family Resources Youth Services Center (FRYSC). He collected and donated toys to children in need.

"I enjoyed this project because the holidays are a magical time for children," he said. "The FRYSC Center coordinators told me that many families are very emotional and extremely grateful when they receive their gifts and that is very rewarding to me."

Graduates of The Center for Rural Development's Rogers Scholars program must plan and complete a community service project within one year after finishing the program.

Cloyd brings acting experiences to his Lindsey Wilson classes

Lindsey Wilson College theatre professor Jeremy Cloyd grew up around the legend of doomed spelunker Floyd Collins, but he said that he did not fully appreciate the enormity of the cave explorer's tragic story until he was cast in Floyd Collins: The Musical.

In 1925, Collins became trapped while exploring Sand Cave in Southcentral Kentucky in what is now part of Mammoth Cave National Park. Collins died in the cave after a furious 14-day rescue effort, which was one of the 20th century's first national media spectacles.

As part of the centennial commemorating Collins' death, Ramsey Theatre Company is producing Floyd Collins: The Musical at 7:30pmCT on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center, 601 College Street, Bowling Green, KY.

The musical, which premiered in 1994, is also getting its Broadway debut later this year as it is part of Lincoln Center Theatre's 2024-25 season. Cloyd is cast in the Ramsey Theatre production as H.T. Carmichael, an engineer who attempts to lead the rescue operation to save Collins.

KHEAA offers students tips for ACT success

From Crystal Dempsey-Gillum

Frankfort, KY - In March, juniors in Kentucky's public high schools will take the ACT as part of the state's academic accountability and equity efforts. These tips from the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) may help students improve their performance on the test:
  • Most of the ACT is based on reading. The more you read, the better you'll do.
  • Take advantage of any free ACT prep courses offered by your school or by local colleges and libraries.
  • Take practice tests online at www.act.org or buy practice tests for use at home.
  • Familiarize yourself with the various sections of the test, as well as testing directions.
  • Get plenty of rest the night before the test, and eat a good breakfast the day of the test.
  • Take No. 2 pencils and a calculator if your school doesn't provide them. You can also choose online only rather than on paper.
  • Answer easy questions first and then come back to the harder questions.
  • Guess if you don't know the answer. Guessing won't hurt your score.
KHEAA is the state agency that administers the merit-based Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES) program, as well as need-based grants and other programs to help students pay their higher education expenses. Kentucky Lottery funds pay for many of those programs.

Basketball: Homecourt advantage is up to you

The ACHS Lady Indians play at 7pmCT on Monday, February 24, 2025 in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY. Tickets are $8 at hometownticketing.com.

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

9 years. That is how long it's been since an Adair County High School girls basketball team has been looking ahead to the District Tournament with more wins than losses on the season.

In that time, the program has gone through four head coaches, 172 losses, 5 single digit win seasons, and countless players. The Lady Indians have had their fair share of season struggles. During the last four years the program has a record of 41-75, and just one trip to the Region Tournament. After eight straight seasons of finishing below .500, this season began no different, a tough 0-3 start made things seem like the Lady Indians were headed for another dismal season, but then something started to happen that had not in quite some time: the team started winning, a lot.

It started with a road win over Washington County and then, after a hard fought loss in the district debut against Campbellsville, the Lady Indians dominated a previously undefeated Butler County team. Then, they won again, and again, and again, and suddenly, with a 52-45 win over Holy Cross, the team had notched their longest winning streak in almost a decade.
