KYTC advises motorists to avoid overnight travel due to flooding

From Amber Hale

Somerset, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Department of Highways District 8 urges motorists to avoid traveling overnight due to significant flooding across the region. The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the area, in effect until 3:30amET on Sunday, February 16, 2025, with additional heavy rainfall expected throughout the night.

Numerous roadways have been impacted by flooding, creating hazardous conditions for drivers. KYTC strongly advises against any unnecessary travel overnight to ensure public safety.

Drivers are reminded to never drive through a flooded roadway. Even a small amount of rushing water can carry a vehicle away, and underlying pavement damage may not be visible. In addition, visibility is diminished in the dark, making it difficult to determine the depth of the water or the swiftness of the current.

As runoff from creeks upstream reaches the rivers, more flooding will occur. Drivers should not drive past "Road Closed" signs in areas where KYTC personnel have placed barricades.

The latest high water road closure report is listed below. High water remains possible even for roads not listed.
