The first Columbia Magazine Epicurean Kentuckian

2025-02-12 - Columbia, KY - Photo from Annette Richards.
Columbia Magazine Editor Ed Waggener was known as Eddie to his family and friends growing up. In this 1953 keepsake picture from his sister Annette, it looks like he's happily enjoying the middle of a ripe watermelon, probably in his mother's kitchen on Jamestown Street in Columbia.

Seeing that reminded me that in our 48 years of marriage, that's the same way Ed enjoyed ripe tomatoes - cutting it at its roundest for the biggest possible center slice, stacking the remaining halves back together and setting the altered tomato aside.

Then he'd place his prime center tomato slice on one of the two slices of white bread, each covered with Miracle Whip, (that was his sandwich rule, it had to have MW equally spread on both slices of bread, not just one slice as my family did in Metcalfe County). He'd artfully place the juicy tomato round on one slice of bread, top it with the other, then gently mash the sandwich together before taking it, and fresh cup of black coffee, back to his writing desk.

Letter: The old phone in the quilt shop

Tami Andrew writes:
Does anyone remember the party line? The kids now days would probably call it a chat room.
Comments re: Keepsake helps us remember when

Tami, you're exactly right about the party line phone service being compared to a chat room. Growing up in Sulphur Well that's what we had and there were about ten people on it, one of them a grandma who loved to listen in on all the calls!

Basketball: Lady Indians travel to Marion Co.

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, the Adair County Lady Indians Varsity Basketball team is back in action as they go on road to take on the Marion County Lady Knights (7-14). Tipoff is set for 5:30pmCT/6:30pmET at the Robe Dome on the campus of Marion County High School, 735 E. Main St., Lebanon, KY. Tickets are $7, and can be purchased in advance through eventlink.com.

The Lady Indians come off a loss to Barren County, while Marion County comes off a 55-64 loss to Nelson County. That loss marked the seventh straight loss for Marion County.

The Lady Indians hosted the Lady Knights back in mid-January and were able to grab a commanding 29 point victory. The Lady Indians beat Marion County simply by scoring in large numbers. If the Lady Indians can do that again tonight they are likely to be able to walk away with a win.

This game comes with massive importance for both teams. If the Lady Indians are able to secure the win they will be able to gain the #3 seed in the District Tournament and face off against Campbellsville for a trip to the Regional Tournament. If the Lady Knights win, they will get the matchup against Campbellsville and Adair County will be forced to face Taylor County in the first round of District Tournament play.

Letter: Walmart remodel

Jessica Edwards writes:
I saw your article on the remodel of Columbia's walmart, and was wondering if the same is happening to Campbellsville's Walmart. I've noticed the shipping containers and fenced off part of the parking lot, but so far no signs saying what's going on. I've just been curious.
We'll try to track down an answer, but if any readers work with Campbellsville WalMart, please use our Comment Form to send information.

Ag Tag donations help 4-H, FFA, and KDA

Op-ed from Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Ag Tag is on the road to $1 million and we need your help getting there.

Last year, Kentucky farmers donated a record-breaking $931,201.81 to the Ag Tag Program. It was the largest amount ever donated in a single year and topped the 2023 total by nearly $200,000. But this year, I'm hoping we can reach that $1 million mark creating even more positive outcomes for Kentucky's agricultural youth.

Ag Tag money is generated through the $10 voluntary donation Kentuckians make each year when they buy or renew their farm vehicle license plates, or "ag tags." The money is then split equally between the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Kentucky FFA, and Kentucky 4-H to support Kentucky's agriculture youth and other organizations and programs benefiting our farm families.

The $10 donation may seem like a small amount. But, by multiplying it by the thousands of Kentuckians that give and then putting those funds in the hands of the department that focuses on the state's agriculture community and the two leading agriculture youth development organizations, we are providing a strong backbone for Kentucky's agricultural future.

As a former FFA kid I know the differences the organization can make in a young person's life. Providing leadership experiences, life lessons, lasting friendships, and giving me the skills I needed for my future, FFA set me off on a path that led me to the Commissioner of Agriculture office.
