Marcia McKinley Skaggs has this keepsake on display at her quilt shop on Main Street in Russell Springs. Youngsters may ask, "what is that?" You do have to be of a certain age to know what life was like when this was in style.

Letter: Blessed by our special grandchildren

Mary Bardin writes:
Stacey, as you know children can be very cruel to a special needs child. The responsibility falls to parents to teach their children kindness and compassion for others. Sometimes the parents are just as cruel as the children. My grandson has autism. He is now 21 years old and has aged out of "The Kids Spot." However he is now enrolled in something for adults in Marion County. His father worried the other children wouldn't accept him and try to bully him.

Marion County seems to have an acceptance in their schools. He will graduate this year. He plans to work at the school by cleaning tables after work. He needs that socialization. My grandson didn't get invited to lot of birthday parties, nor friends coming for overnight visits, but that didn't seem to affect him.

Like Briggs, he seems to be happy and well-adjusted. Also like Briggs, he is kind to everyone and doesn't speak wrongly of anyone. My DIL says God gives special children to special parents. The love of family and friends will keep their lives whole.

Our families are certainly blessed by our special grandchildren. I hope other families can be more accepting.
