Basketball: Indians host Cardinals on Friday

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team returns to the court tonight as they host the Taylor County Cardinals (14-3). Tipoff is scheduled for 7pmCT, following the Lady Cardinals game, on Friday, January 24, 2025, in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY.

In their last matchup in early December, the Indians cruised to 32-point win over Taylor County on the back of extremely accurate shooting. Taylor County has won 7 straight games heading into this one, and Adair Co. has won 5 straight games.

KHSAA's RPI system currently ranks the Cardinals 2nd in the 5th Region, and the Indians 4th, making tonight a highly watched matchup across the region and even the state. However, more than anything else, 20th District supremacy is up for grabs. If Adair County wins tonight they would be able to secure the Number 1 Seed in the District with a win over either Campbellsville on January 31, or Marion County on February 7, 2025.

17 games into the season, this will be just the fourth true road game for Taylor County, and the fourth home game for Adair County, because both teams have played on so many neutral floors.

Come out and support your Adair Co. High School Indians. Students get in free, and tickets for everyone else are $7. Click here to purchase advance tickets: hometownticketing.com.

Students try virtual welding at Adair Learning Academy

From Bradley Stephens, Head Teacher
Adair Learning Academy

Mr. Gordon Judd, from Kentucky Career and Technical Education, has been working with us over the past few weeks to incorporate a Virtual Welding Class for the students at Adair Learning Academy (aka the Adair Youth Development Center).

Students have been able to virtually simulate welding techniques like metal arc welding (stick welding) and mig welding to determine their interest in the occupation, as well as get answers to their questions about the career.

ALA staff would like to thank Mr. Judd for his time and his expertise in this vocational area. Many of the virtual welding mobile shields will remain at ALA for future student use.

Basketball: Lady Indians host Lady Cardinals on Friday

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Lady Indians Basketball team returns to the court tonight as they host the Taylor County Lady Cardinals (14-6). Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30pmCT on Friday, January 24, 2025, in John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY.

Taylor County comes off a 51-47 loss on the road to Green County (to whom the Lady Indians also lost earlier this season). Adair County comes off a 60-46 loss to South Warren.

The Lady Indians and the Lady Cardinals faced each other back in the second game of the season on December 6, 2024, when the Lady Cardinals outlasted the Lady Indians 54-38. Adair County shot just 28% from the floor in that last matchup and still managed to battle to a tie at the half. If the team can shoot the basketball and limit turnovers compared to that December 6 game it would notch a big step towards securing a second straight district win.

Come out and support your Lady Indians. Students get in free, and tickets for everyone else are $7. Click here to purchase advance tickets: hometownticketing.com.

By Sheila Blair, Adair County Occupational Tax Director

I'd like to ask all employees who work in Adair County to check their pay stubs and make sure the correct occupational tax amount is being withheld. Also, the employers, who outsource their payroll, if you would check with your payroll provider to make sure they have the correct amount of tax to be withheld from your employees gross wages.

The Adair County fiscal court amended the occupational tax ordinance in October 2024. The tax rate is to remain at the rate of .50% for 2025, as it was for 2024.

Volunteers needed for LTC Ombudsman Program

From Mandy Weston
Lake Cumberland ADD

There is a little known program in every state mandated by a 1978 amendment to the Older Americans Act. It is the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. Its goal is to help assure that long-term care facility residents live harmoniously and with dignity, feeling free to voice complaints or concerns without reprisal.

There's a tremendous need nationwide for volunteers to make this program work. The ultimate goal is to have one volunteer in each nursing home. After training, volunteers spend 6 to 8 hours a month visiting assigned nursing homes. They talk with residents and observe conditions. Interested volunteers please contact the District Long-Term Care Ombudsman.

To volunteer for the district that includes Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Russell, and Taylor Counties, call 1-800-264-7093. To volunteer for the district that includes Metcalfe County, call 1-800-355-7580. More information is available at www.chfs.ky.gov.
