Circuit Clerk Loy shares organ donation scholarships

Scholarships aim to raise awareness about the critical need for organ donation and transplantation.

From Adair County Circuit Clerk Dennis Loy

Since 1992, the Kentucky Association of Circuit Court Clerks has championed the lifesaving mission of organ donation. Inspired by personal experiences -- including one Circuit Clerk's loss of a loved one awaiting a heart transplant and others with connections to donation -- the Circuit Clerks worked tirelessly to make a difference. Their efforts culminated in successful legislation passed by the Kentucky General Assembly, enabling Kentuckians obtaining a driver's license to contribute to organ and tissue donation initiatives. Since 1992, these contributions have raised over $20 million for organ donation awareness, registering more than 2 million Kentuckians as donors and providing hope to the 100,000 Americans waiting for the gift of life.

"Today's students are tomorrow's leaders," said Stacy Bruner, Trimble Co. Circuit Clerk and Board Treasurer of Donate Life Kentucky Trust. "We are thrilled to introduce this scholarship opportunity for students who are passionate about helping others and advocating for the lifesaving mission of donation."

The new scholarship program offers students an opportunity to creatively express their passion for organ, eye and tissue donation and inspire others to register as donors. When the Circuit Clerks introduced the organ donor program through dollar donations at driver's license, it was the first program of its kind in the United States. This pioneering effort has since inspired similar programs in over 30 states. Details are in the accompanying story.

Carol Perkins: Sounds of Aging

Previous Column: Be Shed Of

By Carol Perkins

When I used to hear older people grunt and groan, I never thought I'd be one of them. My grunting and groaning have also infected Guy. One night, when we played cards with friends near our age, the simple task of getting out of our chairs orchestrated a sympathy of squeaking and creaking.

The next day, most of us shared our night of Charlie horses and leg cramps. Sitting for five hours without getting up more than once or twice- no wonder we suffered. However, nothing stops us from trying to have a little fun.

Deciding to touch up around the house and give Guy a few projects, I ordered a bookcase (cheaper than building) from Amazon.

Kentucky tax filing season begins Jan 27

From Kinsey Woodson

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Revenue (DOR) will begin accepting state individual income tax returns at on Monday, January 27, 2025, and will begin processing returns the same day. The deadline for Kentuckians to file 2024 returns is Tuesday, April 15, 2025. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) also will begin accepting federal individual income tax returns January 27, 2025.

File Early To Avoid Processing Delays
This year, Kentuckians are encouraged to file early to avoid processing delays. DOR will temporarily pause operations for two weeks, from February 26 to March 14, 2025, so it can transition to a new, integrated tax system called MyTaxes.

"We encourage Kentuckians who anticipate a refund to file their taxes early, so they can receive those payments as soon as possible," said Tom Miller, DOR commissioner. "Our team is working hard to transition to a new, modern tax system that's easy to navigate and will benefit our citizens and businesses for years to come."
