Christmas Eve services at Columbia United Methodist Church

By Doug Beard

The Columbia United Methodist Church invites everyone to join together at 11pmCT on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, December 24, 2024, for a sacred time of worship as the family of God. The service will feature traditional carols, readings from the Holy Scriptures, a service of Holy Communion, and joining our voices in singing "Silent Night" by candlelight as we welcome the birth of the Messiah.

"For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this shall be the sign to you: You will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger."

Columbia United Methodist Church is located just off the Public Square at 202 Burkesville St., Columbia, KY.

Basketball: Indians back in tournament action on Friday

Day 3 Tickets for the 2024 King of the Bluegrass Tournament are available at gofan.co for $15 plus fees. Your phone acts as your ticket, and there are no cash sales.

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Friday, December 20, 2024, the Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team returns to action in the second round of the Chad Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass Tournament, as they face the Shamrocks (Rocks) of Trinity High School.

The Indians come off a 9 point loss to North Oldham High School on Wednesday afternoon, while the Rocks come off a 49-51 Overtime loss to South Laurel High School. That game was marred by offensive struggles through and through, especially early on, as the score at the end of the first quarter was just 5-4, within one point of breaking the all-time King of the Bluegrass record for the lowest scoring quarter, the halftime score at 19-11 also came within one point of breaking the lowest-scoring record in a half, set all the way back in 1983. Trinity shot just 34% from the floor and 26% from three on the combined game.

If the Indians want to walk away with a win tonight they need to continue forcing the shooting struggles the Shamrocks showcased last night. The game tips at 8pmCT/9pmET tonight, and will be in Fairdale's East Gym which is located to the right as you walk into the athletic complex at Fairdale High School, 1001 Fairdale Rd., Fairdale, KY.

New free literacy resources for KY schools, libraries, families

From Kinsey Woodson

Frankfort, KY - On December 19, 2024, as part of her commitment to Kentucky students, First Lady Britainy Beshear announced that TeachingBooks is now available and free to use at all Kentucky schools and libraries throughout the commonwealth, as well as online from a laptop or cellphone. This website provides learning resources about approximately 100,000 books for children and young adults.

"Reading to children, either in the classroom or in our public libraries, is one of my favorite things to do," the First Lady said. "On my visits around the state, I've learned that teachers, librarians and families are always looking for ways to bring stories to life for their kids, just like Andy and I loved to do for Will and Lila. That's exactly what TeachingBooks is all about."

She also shared "Winnie's Christmas Book Club," a list of picture books that would make great gifts for Kentucky kids this Christmas season. These include holiday books, Kentucky books and some of the Beshear family's all-time favorite stories. They are all featured on TeachingBooks here, with book cover jigsaw puzzles, videos, discussion questions and more.

The First Lady also encouraged buying from local bookstores and supporting Kentucky authors when shopping.
