Collecting of donations for Christmas

By Joyce M. Coomer

Christmas is on its way. I'm seeing requests from several different organizations for toys, clothes, etc., for needy children. This is good. I donate to such causes myself.

However, there is one thing that always worries me. If there are excess donations, what is done with them? I do know that they are sometimes trashed, for I have seen large garbage bags filled with toys with price tags still attached thrown into dumpsters. Please, please, please, people, don't do this!

Please donate these items, no matter what they may bek to other places. Day care centers -- children and adults. Schools. Medical facilities of all sorts. Nursing homes. Homeless shelters. Local police agencies. Even animal shelters, for the animals there might like a stuffed animal to snuggle up against so they don't feel alone.

To me, trashing items that people donate out of the goodness of their hearts is an insult to them, a total disrespect for their goodness. Please don't insult anyone this year.

Increasing Land Income from Hunting

From Nick Roy
Adair County Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources

Owners of woodlands or croplands looking to increase their farm income might consider leasing the hunting rights of their land. Many hunters, including local, in-state, and out of state, annually seek land to lease hunting rights for. Adair County is positioned in hunting zone two allowing for the harvest of four deer with a limit of one antlered deer. The combination of woodlands and croplands in Adair County has allowed for a thriving deer population. Leasing hunting rights can not only generate additional farm income but can also help control the local deer population and ease pressure on crop damage.

If you would like to learn more about hunting leases, make plans to attend an upcoming meeting at 9:30amCT on December 13, 2024, at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY. UK Wildlife Specialist Dr. Matt Springer will discuss tips on how to lease your land for hunting while reducing risks in these agreements. Both landowners and hunters looking for leases are invited to attend.

For more information, contact the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service at 270-384-2317.
