Lindsey Wilson student-athlete Justin Stearns has been named to the 2023 Mid-South Conference men's cross-country Champions of Character Team, officials announced on Tuesday.

Stearns, of Jamestown, Kentucky, earns the accolade for the second in his career and is the fourth runner in program history to be awarded the honor.

The Mid-South recognizes a Champions of Character Team for each championship sport. The student-athletes that are honored on the Champions of Character Team were nominated by their coaches based on their leadership on campus and in the community while demonstrating the five core character values of the NAIA.

Letter: Welcome Home

By Carole Thomas

I just wanted to say that I am proud of my nephew Chris for all of his writing skills and this poem is the icing on the cake. There's no place like home- everyone finds that out for himself as the years go by!

We had a wonderful life growing up on the family farm with our cousins. Summers were packed with early morning risings to catch a ride on the back of the old pickup truck to take the milk to the Cheese Plant, then a stop at Les Montgomery's store for a Dr. Pepper and a bag of peanuts. Our other brothers, the Clem Cowans family, held so great a part in our lives. All of the grandchildren chose to stay in Kentucky, with most of us within a short drive to Columbia, except my daughter Sarah, who is in Iowa. She too loves to get back to her roots and does so quite frequently.

With all of this being said, Chris, I hope that you keep up your writing skills AND I don't blame you for waiting to move back home AFTER Billy and Freddy eliminated the milk parlor! Enjoy the farm life as you learn that it's not an easy life but it's so mentally rewarding and you are part of that farm too. Welcome home! --Aunt Carole

History: Early Election Precincts in Adair County

By Mike Watson

The County of Adair had five election precincts in June 1825. They were: Casey's Creek, Col. Shaw's, Kerns', East Fork and the Courthouse. Few specifics about these precincts and the locations of voting are to be found today. The few scraps we were able to unearth for the nineteenth century are as follows:

Election precincts for 1822 were to be at Capt. John Bell's on East Fork of Little Barren River, and at Columbia.

Casey Creek Precinct: Location of voting place was at the house of Robert Caskey until January 1827 when the General Assembly authorized the move to Samuel Bland's house. In December of the same year it was changed to Fleming Goode's and in January 1830 changed again to John Smith's.

In the 1830s the precincts were: Columbia, Casey Creek and East Fork. By 1840 they were: Columbia, Neatsville and East Fork, specific locations not given.

The voting locations in July 1855 were Columbia, Neatsville, White Oak, Harmony, Big Creek and East Fork. --Mike Watson, An Adair County, Kentucky, History, 2001.
