Turn down the volume to protect hearing Around 13 percent of Americans -- or about 30 million -- over the age of 12 have some degree of hearing loss in both ears. Numerous factors can contribute to hearing loss, like age, illness, or excess noise. But while we can't stop time or avoid every illness, we can take steps to protect our hearing when the volume gets a little too loud. According to NYU Langone Health, prolonged exposure to loud noises can damage the fine hair cells in the inner ear that convert sound waves into electrical signals that our brains can process. Sounds at or below 70 decibels -- or about the volume of a normal conversation -- are considered safe for any period of time. Extended or repeated exposure to sounds above 85 decibels are known to cause hearing loss and tinnitus. History Monday: 13th Kentucky Cavalry The Columbia Public Square history walk featuring old stories of those "Shot, Stabbed, Hanged & More," with Mike Watson and Dave Thomas, is getting rave reviews. One of the stories Mike Watson shared went like this, "I'm going to consolidate three or four stories here that all focused around the Civil War because we were right in the middle of everything. "You have to keep in mind that part of the reason for that was geographically we are right between Lebanon where the railroad came to, and the Cumberland River. Confederates were stationed across the Cumberland River and the Union camps were stationed right around here. ACHS Indians defeat Metcalfe County 39-0 By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer Friday night the Adair County High School Indians defeated Metcalfe County 39-0 in their final regular season game of the year. The Indians dominated the Hornets on offense, defense, and special teams. The offense outgained Metcalfe 297 to 95 yards with the rushing attack carrying the large majority of that, led by Lane Grant who rushed for 152 yards and a touchdown on 11 attempts. Mable Maxine Warren, 96, Green County, KY Mable Maxine Warren was born November 15, 1927, in Green County, KY to the late Ivy Lee Despain and Ida Pearl Clark Despain. She departed this life Wednesday evening, October 30, 2024, at her daughter's home in Greentown, Pennsylvania, having attained the age of ninety-six years, eleven months and fifteen days. She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of Sand Lick Separate Baptist Church. She worked for RCA in Indianapolis for 25 years and retired from Fruit of the Loom. Basketball: LWC downs Kentucky Christian to remain unbeaten The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team downed Kentucky Christian 95-76 on the last day of the Brady Button Memorial on Saturday afternoon, November 2, 2024. This win improves the Blue Raiders to 4-0 as they cap off an early-season homestand and look to build on their early success. Lindsey Wilson shot the ball well and finished the game 56.7 percent from the field. This marks back-to-back games shooting over 55 percent.
