1st Battalion, 623d Field Artillery Regiment returns from Middle East deployment

Glasgow, KY- The Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 623d Field Artillery Regiment, Kentucky Army National Guard, have returned home following a successful 10-month deployment to the Central Command (CENTCOM) Area of Operations in the Middle East. The Battalion, made up of men and women from across Kentucky, served with distinction in eight different countries, contributing to key military operations and strengthening partnerships with allied nations. The deployment marked a significant chapter in the history of the 1-623d, which performed a wide array of missions critical to regional security and stability.

Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Jason T. Simpson expressed deep pride in the unit's accomplishments and the professionalism displayed by its soldiers. "The men and women of the 1-623d executed their mission with the utmost dedication and honor, representing the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the United States with excellence," he said. "We are grateful for their service and thrilled to have them safely reunited with their families and loved ones."

The Soldiers of the 1-623d are now returning to their homes across Kentucky after months of separation, eager to reconnect with their families and communities.

Welcome-Home Ceremonies were conducted in Glasgow, Tompkinsville, Monticello, and Campbellsville, where the units accomplishments were recognized and celebrated by military leaders, local officials, and the soldiers' families.

LWC Honors 4 at 93rd Homecoming

There was one central theme at Lindsey Wilson College's 93rd Homecoming celebration and that was the profound significance of coming home. Newly minted LWC Director of Alumni Relations Allison Cross, who has been in her new role for only 19 days, opened the luncheon with just that sentiment.

"I have to tell you, it feels like I never left," said Cross who is a 2008 graduate of LWC. "This place just feels like home to me. Lindsey Wilson took a scared, shy, and frankly lost teenager and turned her into an adult - someone who has a passion for learning and someone with a passion for serving."

LWC's 2024 Outstanding Young Alumna Award recipient Emily Carnall '12 McCullough emphasized the same feeling when she spoke of how important it is to start your life with a strong foundation and support system.

"Lindsey Wilson is not just a school, it is the place where my roots were planted and from those roots, everything else in my life has grown," said McCullough from Mt. Washington, Kentucky. "It is often said that our work is a reflection of the lessons we've learned. And for me, everything I do now is rooted in the experiences I had during my time at LWC."

Bottled Water Donations for Newport, TN

From Kisha Burton

Anthony Baird, Director of Bands at Lindsey Wilson College says, "As many of you are aware, Northeast Tennessee suffered from catastrophic flooding over the weekend due to the effects of hurricane Helene. One of the hardest hit communities is the town of Newport located in Cocke County. For some context. The entire downtown area was completely flooded, entire homes and farms wiped out and, many of the roads and bridges connecting to North Carolina completely washed out. The damage done to this rural mountain community is frankly unbelievable and will take years for the people to recover.

Additionally, the water treatment facility was completely destroyed. Leaving almost the entire county without access to safe water. Newport First Baptist Church pastor Richard Lloyd informs me that it could take 3 weeks or longer for the facility to be rebuilt and begin providing safe, drinkable/usable water to the community again.

In response to this dire need, Lindsey Wilson SGA, Blue Raider Band, ResLife, and other Lindsey Wilson programs will collect bottled water or jugs of water this week, Tuesday through Friday, October 1 through 4, 2024, to donate to the city of Newport and Cocke County. "

Water donations can be brought directly to the Blue Raider Band Building between 9amCT and 8pmCT, or the Bonner Scholars Office from 7:30pmCT to 4:30pmCT. Both buildings are on the Lindsey Wilson campus at 210 Lindsey Wilson Street, Columbia, KY. Please direct any questions or inquiries to: bairda@lindsey.edu .
