Harold McCoy, 77, Metcalfe County, KY (1947-2024) James Harold McCoy, age 77, formally of Summer Shade, KY, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was born April 12, 1947, to the late Harold and Velma (Brown) McCoy. He was a member the Summer Shade Christian Church, but attended at the Seven Springs Church, in Node. He loved his church family so much. He enjoyed watching and attending his grandsons sports and taking them fishing and deer hunting. He was a proud veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, also serving one year in Vietnam. He served his country with pride. He was born in Metcalfe County on December 11, 1960, to the late Willie Robert "Bootie" Ervin and Maelene Burris Ervin. Indians vs Lakers to battle Friday night By Trey Stephens Columbia Magazine Staff Writer On Friday Night, Adair County High School Football will begin its season on the road at Russell County. The Indians will look for a repeat of the 40-0 victory over the Lakers in the season opener last year. Russell County still leads the series against Adair County 8-5 since 2010. This game specifically, will have added meaning for Russell County as it will be the debut regular season game held on their new Finley Field at the First National Bank Athletic Complex. Russell Co. Extension Homemakers kick off their new year From Sue Foley Russell County Extension Homemakers President The Russell County Extension Homemakers started their 2024-2024 year on July 1, 2024. The first Council meeting of the year is scheduled for 4pmCT on Monday, August 26, 2024. The homemaker group has five clubs: Sunset, Crafty Bees, Homemakers on the Go, Piecemakers Quilt Guild, and Homemakers by Heart. Three of these clubs meet monthly in the evening, while two clubs meet during the daytime at the Extension Office. If you are interested in attending a club meeting, call the Russell County Extension Office at 270-866-4477 and ask for Megan Gullett. County participants are welcome to be members-at-large, choose a club, or join as a mailbox member, where one can receive a newsletter in the mail. Cumberland still lowest unemployment for July 2024 From Mike Clark/Kim Saylor Brannock Frankfort, KY - Unemployment rates rose in 119 counties between July 2023 and July 2024, including Adair and surrounding counties, and fell in Lee County, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency within the Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet.
Cumberland County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the commonwealth at 3.8%. It was followed by Woodford County, 4%; Washington County, 4.2%; Anderson, Boone, Bourbon, Carroll, Fayette and Scott counties, 4.3% each; and Jessamine County, 4.4%. City is working with small businesses From Mayor Pam Hoots The City of Columbia is working with local shop owners in an initiative to support "shopping local first". Shopping local supports the economy, and builds relationships. One idea is to find local food trucks and local personnel that have baking businesses that they could highlight in a special event at storefronts.
