Kentuckians reminded to slow down this summer

From Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - As travel increases this summer, Kentuckians are reminded to slow down and pay attention to posted speed limits to keep all road users safe.

Speed limits are the law and enforceable if not obeyed. Driving over the limit greatly reduces a driver's ability to respond to unexpected situations, such as stopped or slowed traffic, an object in the road, or encountering vulnerable road users such as highway workers, pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.

"We want families to get out and enjoy all the great things Kentucky has to offer this summer - and that means asking everyone to take the steps necessary to stay safe," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "Please slow down and be patient with others so you can get to your destination safely."

Approximately 33% of crashes in Kentucky involve a speeding or aggressive driver, so the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is partnering with law enforcement agencies across the state on the "Not So Fast, Kentucky" speed awareness campaign through July 31, 2024.

From Captain Paul Blanton

Frankfort, KY - On July 11, 2024, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the successful launch of a statewide drug operation by the Kentucky State Police following a three-month investigation into suspected drug trafficking rings.

All 16 posts participated in Operation Summer Heat, and preliminary results indicate: 206 arrests and 490 charges issued (36 arrests at Post 15 in Columbia); and combined seizure of 554 grams of fentanyl, 219 grams of cocaine, 4,862 grams of methamphetamine, 41 grams of heroin, 40 grams of spice, 2,931 fentanyl pills, 50 hydrocodone pills, 64 oxycodone pills, 90 hallucinogens and 14 firearms. The street value of the illicit drugs seized is approximately $684,953.50. Additionally, $37,159 in cash, $10,000 in stolen tools and one stolen vehicle were recovered during the operation. The operation remains ongoing, and additional arrests will be made.

"We have seen drug overdose deaths decline over the past two years and decreases in many of our serious crime rates - these results are in part thanks to the work our Kentucky State Police," said Gov. Beshear. "We are grateful for their continued commitment to help us build a better, safer Kentucky for all our families."

Letter: Paint sign on the road

Ann Pearson writes:
We are constantly having to replace signs and most of it's due to the semis being allowed through the square. How long are we going to just keep allowing property of all kinds to be destroyed before the police put a stop to these big trucks coming around the Square? They run on the curbs, hit signs, tear up side walks and such driving over them.

There is a bypass, why can't they use this? As for the yeild sign, geez just paint it on the road and be done with it.
