Kristin Jacobson named to CAC Kentucky board

Kristin Jacobson of Columbia has been selected to serve on the Children's Advocacy Centers of Kentucky board of directors.

She has worked for several years with the Lake Cumberland Children's Advocacy Center based in Russell County, as assistant director, and now director. Her interest in the Center began when she interned with the LCCAC while a student at Campbellsville University's Carver School of Social Work. She also served through the years as a volunteer.

The Center serves children who are alleged victims of sexual abuse, severe physical abuse, or witness to violent crimes.

Victoria Lynn Groce, 62, Adair County, KY (1962-2024)

Victoria Lynn Groce, 62, of Columbia, KY passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2024. She was born on March 27, 1962, in Bowling Green, KY to the late Betty York Waid.

She was a member of the New Life for The Nations Church and enjoyed crocheting, reading, studying her bible, and spending time with her family and friends.

Lindsey Wilson College weighs name change to LWU

Lindsey Wilson College could soon become Lindsey Wilson University, according to LWC President William Luckey.

If all goes well with current discussions, students and the surrounding community can expect this change to take place by July 1, 2025.

"It's just something I've got to hear about from more people," Luckey said. "I've got to get more feedback to process and digest, but if the Board [of Trustees] were to take a vote today, they would definitely want to do it."

Beverly C. Smith, 56, Columbia, KY (1967-2024)

Beverly Carol (Bybee) Smith of Columbia died on Friday, March 29, 2024 at Norton Women's and Children's Hospital in Louisville. She was 56 years old.

The funeral service will be held at NoonCT on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Patrick Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Columbia Cemetery.

Visitation is requested after 11amCT on Saturday.

At the bake sale last weekend for the Metcalfe Shoebox Mission, a lady and her friends were browsing through the goodies, and I asked what she had planned for Easter.

She said, "Nothing, it's just another day."

I couldn't hold back. I touched her arm and said, "No, it isn't just another day, but I'm sure you know that."

Lanterns & Tombstones Cemetery Walk returns Friday

The Third Season of Columbia City Cemetery Walking Tour will take place starting at 7pmCT on Friday night, April 5, 2024, in conjunction with Columbia's "To-the-Nines" downtown shopping event. Dave Thomas and Mike Watson will lead participants through various parts of the 210+ year old graveyard, pointing out bits of interesting lore along the way.

This is a walking tour through the historic cemetery and participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes, bring a jacket if it is cool, and your enthusiasm. Small flashlights will be provided to aid you in winding your way on the Tour.

KBC Blood Drive on April 9

There will be a community blood drive from 1pmCT to 5pmCT on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at the Columbia Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, 501 Jamestown Street, Columbia. As a thank you for donating at the drive below, all donors will receive a great springy "Give Y'all" T-shirt (while supplies last).

KSP Post 15 to conduct traffic safety checkpoints

Kentucky State Police Post 15 will be conducting periodic traffic safety checkpoints in the Post 15 area, which includes Green, Taylor, Marion, Washington, Russell, Casey, Adair, Metcalfe, Monroe, Clinton, and Cumberland counties.

These checkpoints will be conducted as part of Post 15's highway safety efforts. Troopers will be checking for violations of Kentucky traffic and regulatory laws including, but not limited to, motor vehicle equipment safety, licensing of drivers, motor vehicle registration, child restraints, and operation of motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants.

ACHS Baseball defeats Spencer County 18-3

Adair County High School Baseball defeated Spencer County 18-3 in their second game at the Fort Walton Beach Bash. This resulted in a shortened game with just 5 innings due to a mercy rule.

This was an impressive win over a very talented Spencer County team. The Indians continue their excellent season as they improve to 10-3 leading into their matchup against Franklin County.

The Whitehurst Diaries: Kildeer Encounters

Kildeers arrived from their cold season habitats while it was still officially winter here in south-central Kentucky.

By February they were in evidence as I walked along the gravel lane that connects us to the main road.

They swooped low over our neighbor's cow pasture, alighting to strut along the verge of the lane uttering their distinctive cry, 'Peent, peent!'
