Judy Luttrell, 81, of Columbia, KY (1942-2024)

Judy Carolyn (Rogers) Luttrell of Columbia passed away on Friday, March 29, 2024, at Summit Manor Nursing Home. She was 81 years old.

Graveside services will be held at 11amCT on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at the Columbia Cemetery, with Bro. Barney Taylor officiating. There will be no public visitation.

Group Swimming Lessons offered again at Holloway

The Lindsey Wilson College swim team is hosting 3 weeks of group swimming lessons at the Health & Holloway Center, April 1-4, April 8-11, and April 15-18, 2024.

This program has been very popular the last three years, and the children of the community have been able to learn in a fun environment. There will be three consecutive weeks that these group lessons will be hosted, for $45 per week. Parents are welcome to sign up for any week, or multiple weeks. Tadpoles and Guppies have two time slots to choose from, whereas Angel Fish and Stingrays only have one available timeslot per week.

We hope to see many children of the community join us in these fun-filled three weeks! To sign up, there is no HWC membership required. Parents can either sign up at the front desk of the HWC, or email Annissa at koekemoera@lindsey.edu to sign up via email. Payments are due at the front desk of the HWC before the start of their first lesson.

The lessons are broken up into four group-levels, depending on their swimming abilities:

Students encouraged to design new I VOTED sticker

Frankfort, KY - Secretary of State Michael Adams is inviting all Kentucky students to participate in the inaugural "I Voted" sticker contest.

The contest is open to all Kentucky students from kindergarten to twelfth grade. To enter, students need to send in their best design for an "I Voted" sticker. The winning sticker design will be handed out to voters in participating counties during the 2024 general election.

Interested students can send their design to sos.secretary@ky.gov before 4pmCT on May 17, 2024. Please include the student's name, school, address, and phone number in the submission, along with "I Voted Sticker Contest" in the email subject line. To be considered, pictures must be original work and include the words "I Voted." Please upload in JPEG or PNG format.

Annex will remain open for shelter Monday night

On Monday, April 1, 2024, The Adair County Annex building, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY, will remain unlocked throughout the storms expected late tonight and into Tuesday. Access can be made via the glass door facing the barbershops.

Updated guidance about weather was issued by the National Weather Service in Louisville, KY, at 4:22amET on Monday, April 1, 2024, for portions of Central Kentucky that include Adair and all surrounding counties. Widely scattered strong to severe storms will be possible Monday afternoon and evening, but better chances for storms and heavy rain will arrive after midnight tonight. Strong winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes will all be possible, especially late tonight.

Strong to severe storms are likely Tuesday, with damaging winds, large hail, and isolated spin-up tornadoes all possible. Multiple rounds of thunderstorms may lead to localized flash flooding, especially later in the day on Tuesday.

Hancock and Hargrove named Students of the Week

Adair County High School would like to recognize Sebastian Hancock and Brayleigh Hargrove for being named Freshmen "Students of the Week" for March 8, 2024. Sebastian and Brayleigh, along with several other freshmen students, were nominated by Freshmen ARROW Academy teachers for this honor. Sebastian and Brayleigh were chosen, after a vote, for their kindness, character, and ability to excel in the school and classroom. Congratulations to both students!

Each week, Adair County High School ARROW Academy Teachers will nominate and select one male and one female student from the freshmen student body to receive this recognition. The students will be awarded one free drink of their choice from Indian Grounds Coffee, and their photo will run all week on the video announcement boards within the school, and on Columbia Magazine.

DARE graduation at ACES

The Columbia Police Department held its 5th grade DARE graduation on Friday afternoon, March 29, 2024, at Adair County Elementary School. Students completed the course during the spring semester, and were recognized on Friday by the Columbia Police Department and ACES staff.

During the event, ACES students Carter Nguyen and Bella Cole were recognized for winning the Essay Contest.

The Columbia Police Department would like to thank Adair County Elementary School for giving us the opportunity to perform DARE as a community outreach, and to thank local businesses and individuals for donating towards gifts and prizes for students.

Tommy Helm, 66, Russell County, KY native (1957-2024)

Tommy Joe Helm, 66, of Columbia, passed away Friday, March 29, 2024 at home.

He was born in Jamestown, KY on August 9, 1957, a son of the late Faye (Weston) and James Helm. He was a construction worker.

State gives $1 million to historic Adair Courthouse

"This majestic structure is... the visual link to life, hearth and home."

The $1 million allocation from the Kentucky legislature for the renovation of the historic Adair County courthouse is exciting news for our community. This significant funding is a testament to the dedication and hard work of numerous local citizens who have tirelessly advocated for the preservation of this landmark over the past two decades.

The effort to renovate the courthouse dates back well before 2009 when the last public office was moved from the courthouse to the annex building. The Adair County Fiscal Court worked with the Adair Heritage Association to consider the future use of the building and searched for ways to fund needed repairs.

KSP: 3 lives lost in two-vehicle accident in Liberty

LIBERTY, Ky. (March 31, 2024) - On March 31, 2024 at approximately 2:03 P.M. EST, Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 Troopers responded to a two-vehicle injury collision at the intersection of US 127 and KY 70 in Casey County.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Otis Tapscott, age 85 of Liberty, was traveling eastbound on KY 70 in a 2005 Jeep Liberty when he disregarded a stop sign controlling the US 127 and KY 70 intersection. Mr. Tapscott entered the intersection and collided with a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox traveling southbound on KY 127. The Chevrolet Equinox was being operated by Teresa Burton, age 56 of Yosemite.

Larry Marshall, 75, Adair County, KY native (1948-2024)

George Lawrence Marshall, known to friends as Larry, started life in Columbia, Kentucky. His mother often reminded him that he was just a few days older than Prince (now King) Charles. His parents were James Clyde and Sara Jean Lawrence Marshall. He grew up with an older brother, Jimmy.

Larry graduated from Adair County High School, and received a degree in biology from Centre College. Larry liked to say that he did what any biology major would do - he went into the shoe business.
