Opinion: Kentucky needs a Hands Free state law

By James Roberts

This is a picture (below) of a sign that I had taken at a Tennessee welcome center some time back. This is what the State of Kentucky needs desperately to try to curb the excessive use of electronic devices while driving. I sent this to Senator Max Wise and we conversed several times via email on this matter. Supposedly the Kentucky State Highway Department was looking into the possibility of working with the Kentucky Legislature to address this problem.

I haven't heard about anything being done about this. Maybe with enough people contact our lawmakers we can all together get something finally done. The contact info is: Max.Wise@lrc.ky.gov.

Just trying to help, --James

Letter: Roundabouts

Mig Feuser writes:
When I started driving a car, which is nearly 45 years ago now, I got used to roundabouts in Great Britain. Some of them were the large ones like Trafalgar Square in London - infamously known from the National Lampoon's European Vacation movie - others were simply white dots in the middle of a smalltown intersection.

It works absolutely fine. Only two rules: the traffic in the roundabout has the right of way - and set your blinker when you're leaving. First is mandatory to avoid wrecks, second is a nice gesture towards other people.

Later, when roundabouts spread over the rest of Europe, the people needed to get used to the two main rules, but they made it. And I'm pretty sure that we Kentuckians will make that too. Saves a lot of time in traffic, makes it safer (statistically proven) - and as we see at the Square it's working. Okay, setting the blinker when you intend to leave has still to be learned - but I think we can make that too.
