Stotts home discussed at Adair Heritage meeting

2024-03-12 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The ancient little brick home silhouetted in the evening sky was under discussion at the Adair Heritage Association Tuesday evening. It was in the Stotts family, then the Lasley family. Efforts will be made to contact present owners to see if restoration of it and the cemetery behind it might be in the works. Opinion: Kentucky can and should increase civic education

By Michael G. Adams
Kentucky Secretary of State

The test results are in, and Kentucky is barely passing when it comes to civic health. Civic education is desperately needed in our schools, and our lawmakers need to act now to ensure our children will grow into adults capable of self-government.

My Office recently conducted a Civic Health Assessment, with mixed results. Relative to the rest of the country, Kentuckians seem to be more accepting of other viewpoints. Our Assessment found that 75 percent of Kentuckians are friends with people who have opposing viewpoints, and 61 percent think it is better for politicians to compromise than to constantly bicker.

Another bright spot in the Assessment was that just 19 percent of Kentuckians get their news primarily from social media. Kentuckians overwhelmingly get their news from legitimate, local news outlets, whether television or newspaper.

That's the good news. Here's the bad news.

City of Columbia: Gas Line Project update

From Tiffany Collins

The City of Columbia is continuing to progress on several projects in the community including the Hudson Street Gas Line Project, renovations to the Little League Park, and another gas line project.

The city received an ARC (Appalachian Research Commission) grant last fall. After their notification, the federal organization that (in this case, the USDA Rural Development) met with the city and engineering representatives.

One of the primary objectives to be completed is an environmental study, which is very extensive in nature. The city is working closely with a consultant, and it is progressing. They are anticipating completion within four to six weeks of the study.

Letter: Not enough traffic

Jim Hudson writes:
It is highly likely that there never will be a signal at this location, there is simply not enough traffic on either of these roads to justify a signal. There is nothing wrong with the roadway, there is plenty of sight distance for this intersection. Driver error is not justification for a signal. Most people think that adding a traffic signal is the perfect solution to all problems.

Sometimes the opposite is true, especially on a 55 mph roadway. Too many drivers run red lights producing horrendous side impact crashes, usually resulting in serious injuries or fatalities.

From Josh Brockman, Adair County Sheriff

Ky 704 will be closed approximately 2 hours as a result of a dump truck overturning on roadway around 7 a.m. this morning. Emergency services are on scene and operator is receiving medical attention.

The blockage is about 1 mile from the city limits. We ask residents to seek alternative route to Columbia. Ky 768 to Ky 55 south is currently being used as alternative route. We hope to have roadway open by 9.
