Another scam artist comes close to succeeding

Scams are coming by mail, by email, by text message and by phone.

Monday we reported the bank scam alert. Now this one was shared at church Sunday, where the intended victim and her husband barely made it away from the scammer. They want others to be aware.

A double hit scam put extreme pressure on the local couple. It first arrived in a text message on the smart phone of the busy young Columbia woman. Then she got a phone call from an authoritative male, referring to that text, saying she had to pay 10% immediately or risk horrible action against her.

Bernice Johnson, 84, Russell County, KY (1939-2024)

Bernice Johnson was born April 25, 1939, in Russell Springs, Kentucky. She loved growing up with her large family and helping on the farm. She often told stories of the antics she and her brothers and sisters would get into.

Bernice embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength of spirit, and an unending generosity. She had a servant's heart and lived by 1 Peter 4:10, "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others..." Bernice was a member of the West 80 Church of God, where she had many friends and where she loved to help in whatever capacity she could.

All little league players and cheerleaders will be recognized in between the boys and girls games vs Caverna. Obviously, weather is always a threat, but we are planning on this night.

Some items of interest about the banquet: Regardless of the date I choose-there will be conflicts. I am rolling with this date regardless of travel ball or whatever else. I have to accommodate my schedule as well and baseball will be starting soon. We will have a meal. All coaches and my help can bring their immediate family. All players can have two guests-be it parents, siblings, etc. It must be two guests. If there are multiple players in the same family please two guests.

I look forward to celebrating the season.

For those hosting a Super Bowl viewing party or attending one on Sunday, February 11, 2024, fans have an important job to do: help keep impaired drivers off the road so everyone can make it home safely on game night.

Tommy Druen: Unique Contributions

Previous Column: Looking for Happiness

By Tommy Druen

Rejected and dejected, a 27-year-old Walt Disney found himself on a train departing New York City in February of 1928. His trip had aimed to secure a more favorable contract with Universal Pictures for his work on shorts featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Failing to secure an acceptable offer, he now faced a grueling 72-hour solo train ride back to Los Angeles, immersed in his own thoughts.

This cross-country trip would prove to be the most pivotal in Disney's life. It was during this journey, trying to think of an alternative to Oswald, that he first conceived the idea of a cartoon mouse. The inspiration came from a real-life mouse he used to feed at his desk seven years earlier in Kansas City. Collaborating with Ub Iwerks, his close friend and creative partner, Disney brought his concept to life. Within ten months, Mickey Mouse made his theatrical debut in Steamboat Willie.

Mickey was much more than the average cartoon character.
