Carol Perkins: Reserved

Previous Column: Mood Rings (2024)

By Carol Perkins

On the coldest day of the week, my first cousin, Donald Allen Reece, was laid to rest at the Metcalfe Memorial Gardens. It had been a rough week for everyone, especially with the icy weather. On the day of the funeral, however, friends and family filled the chapel. As customary, "Reserved" cloths appeared on the backs of chairs for family members. I draped my coat over the back of a chair in the back row of this reserved section and sat with other relatives.

After a moving sermon by our minister, Steve Scholar of the Edmonton Baptist Church, and a touching eulogy by my husband, Guy (he and Don were golfing buddies as well as friends), we filed by his wife of fifty years, Freeda Reece, and the man we all knew and loved.

As unexpected and as emotional as this one was, I don't think I have ever been to a funeral that something funny or smile-worthy didn't happen. After the burial, the Edmonton Baptist Church and Edmonton Methodist Church prepared a meal for the family.

ACPC and ACMS Raise $560 for JOY Ministries

From Hannah Peck

JOY Ministries would like to say THANK YOU to Adair County Primary Center and Adair County Middle School for filling up their "JOY Jars." JOY Jars were provided to each classroom to be filled with spared dollars and loose change. The key message behind this challenge was that little things can add up to create BIG results! This was evident through the hard work of our students, many of which gave their own allowance, to help others!

A big congratulations goes out to Ms. Haley Starnes's 4th Period (ACMS) and Ms. Katherine Curry's 2nd Grade Class (ACPC) for raising the most money at each of their schools. They will be enjoying a Pizza Party to celebrate their hard work!

If you would like to support JOY Ministries you can give online at www.joy-ministires.org, stop by 400 Greensburg St, or mail your gift to PO Box 114, Columbia, KY 42728.

Jane Montgomery Casey article sparks questions

By John Stuekerjuergen

Phil Hanna kindly made me aware of a Columbia Magazine article, published in 2012, about Jane Montgomery Casey that was written by Vonnie Kolbenschlag. Mrs. Casey spent her last years in West Point, Iowa, my hometown. I am wondering if Vonnie knows when Mrs. Casey first moved from Kentucky to Irish Grove, Illinois. Also, does Vonnie have any additional information about Mrs. Casey's years in West Point, Iowa (activities, who she lived with, etc.)? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

FYI: I am writing a three-part article about Mrs. Casey for my hometown's historical society and its Facebook page:
  • Part 1: Early years in Kentucky, including the Indian attack that killed her father and brother.
  • Part 2: Marriage to Col. William Casey and status as matriarch of her family.
  • Part 3: Moving to Irish Grove, IL and then West Point, Iowa, with special focus on the latter.
Despite years of research, I have yet to find out whether Sam Clemens ever met his great grandmother Casey. Hope springs eternal.

Kentucky Color: Bird Dogs and Me

By Billy Joe Fudge

As most of you know, I was raised an only child. I had a big brother, Daryl Gene, that was born just barely alive for a few minutes. His claim to fame that I keep going for him is that he weighed 13 lbs. Even though I had no siblings with which to grow up, I can assure you that I was never alone.

I was never alone because wherever I went on the farm, I always was accompanied by one or more of these guys. In the front of this picture was the elder statesman, Smokey. Behind Smokey was his son Mickey and the liver spotted dog to the left was the odd ball out of these three, Duke. Duke was a hard worker in the field but even with much less talent than Smokey and Mickey, Duke became a most adept, Singles Dog. I'll explain later.

Although there was a dog or two which entered the scene for varying lengths of stay during my childhood and teenage years, these three were my friends and we were always there for each other. The only exception to our time together was when one or all of them would be on the hunt with Dad and one or more of his friends. There were times when they (the dogs) would take a long road trip or even a plane ride as far away as Indiana, Illinois and Iowa to hunt landlubber type birds like quail or pheasant.

Yes, these three were, in the professional vernacular, Bird Dogs. You must remember that Bird Dogs were not just dogs that hunted birds but they had to have the genes for it.

Letter: Video of Columbia

Doug McCammish writes:
Very nicely done! Very positive impressions of Columbia (except for the traffic on the square). Wonderful to be able to "visit" Columbia again.

PS: The video should convince voters that something needs to be done about that traffic - especially the speed.

Waking up to a snow this Friday morning

By Linda Waggener

All area schools are either closed for another snow day or NTI day. Businesses and services are scrambling to get work covered and also to allow employees to stay as safe as possible on this snowy Friday, January 19, 2024.

Not much accumulation is predicted. The temperature is the focus - below freezing in the mid-twenties in the seven o'clock hour and the direction for the day is down. It will drop to below 20 degrees by around 5pmCT. Overnight the temperature will drop to 2 degrees.

It's a good day to slow down, exercise patience, keep the pipes dripping, check on family and neighbors and know that spring is just around the corner.
