Hazardous driving conditions remain; more snowfall expected

From Amber Hale

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 highway crews continue to plow and treat roadways across the district. All roads remain partially to completely covered and slick in Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Lincoln, McCreary, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Russell and Wayne counties.

The combination of below-freezing air and pavement temperatures poses challenges to how fast salt and de-icing materials can melt snow, especially after dark. Motorists should avoid travel if possible. If you must travel slow down, leave plenty of space between vehicles and give yourself extra time to reach your destination.

Crews will remain focused on priority A snow routes- which include interstates, parkways, U.S. highways, and some other 4-lane routes. Once those routes are addressed crews will work to clear priority B and C routes. KYTC asks for patience as crews are working as hard as they can to clear routes. For a complete county-by-county snow and ice priority list please go to: http://SnowKY.ky.gov.

A winter storm warning remains for our area with additional snowfall expected into the early morning hours of Tuesday. Motorists should watch for slick roads tonight and during the Tuesday morning commute, even on treated surfaces, due to the re-freezing of moisture and extended cold temperatures.

The first measurable snow of 2024--January 15th...

By Mike Watson

The weather outside is frightful one more time, and there may well be more in the offing. We in Kentucky usually have plenty of snow and ice in almost any winter. Not a record, but cabin fever may overtake many residents in the coming frigid days. Last evening, Sunday, in the space of twenty minutes, roads and walks went from clear to white. By morning, two and one-half to three inches covered our surfaces.

I fought the notion of a short historical sketch on past snowfalls, but here are a few weather notes assembled from near-forty years of research into Adair County's past:

The first week of January 1886 brought a very cold snap, with temperatures in the region dropping well below zero. Stanford, in Lincoln County, officially recorded a week-long low of 24 below zero. Rockcastle County registered 28 below. Adair County was likely in the same temperature range.

Letter: Judge Bryant speaks at Chamber

Victoria Pike writes:
I'd just like to thank Judge Bryant for bringing such an upbeat message to the Chamber about the economic opportunities coming to Adair County. His positive attitude toward things in general was very refreshing. He has made it through the first year with notable progress.

I'm looking forward to the next 3 to see what he can accomplish. Our Chamber and EDA board are doing great things for us. Let's get behind them and support their innovative thinking. There are no limits to what we can do here in Adair County if we ALL think positive. That's the key. Thinking positive and moving forward.

Letter: Had to click the link

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Linda, you have truly mastered the art and or science of "click bait"! After reading your challenge to not "click", I couldn't wait to read your dissertation.

As to your comments, I think we have to excuse some people's feeble attempts at humor. Humor can be a very effective and inoffensive way to help folk to remove the filter when looking at themselves in the mirror. To see ourselves the way others see us can often be revealing and liberating, especially when we can do so with smiles on our faces.

However, there is never an excuse for prejudice, hate or loathing, especially when they are veiled as humor.
