Drive carefully on Hurt Street in Columbia

2023-10-23 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The accident has been cleared away but there is evidence the utility pole will be needing some repairs. Drive carefully at the bottom of Hurt Street when passing by it. Hurt is a heavily used short cut connector street from the top of Jamestown Hill toward the Public Square. It's easy to gain speed going down the big hill and not be prepared for the sharp curve by this utility pole before Hurt connects with Guardian Street.

Silent City: Hershel Clay Baker by Dave Thomas

Silent City performer Dave Thomas brought the story of Hershel Clay Baker to the stage - the historic Columbia Cemetery - during the 2023 event. The notes from his presentation to the crowd of history lovers follows:

Good afternoon, my name is Herschel Clay Baker, I've been here quite some time, but, I was up and about long before I made it here. December 16, 1841...the day I was born, a ways from here in Cumberland County, to Elaizer Clay Baker and Sarah Alexander Baker, my parents, who I sadly lost very young. I was only 5 when my father died and at 14 I lost my mother.

After my mother passed is when I came to Columbia, to live with my uncle, Thomas Alexander, who was a local Judge.

Russell Co. site considered for National Register

From Audrie Lamb

Frankfort, KY - Twelve Kentucky sites are being considered for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, including The H.M. Smith General Merchandise and Fonthill Post Office in Russell County. The Kentucky Historic Preservation Review Board will hear presentations on these nominations at 10:30amET on October 30 20232, at the Paul Sawyer Public Library located at 319 Wapping St., Frankfort, KY.

The review board is charged with evaluating and recommending National Register submissions from Kentucky. The program is administered by the Kentucky Heritage Council/State Historic Preservation Office in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS). Following review board deliberation, NPS will have 45 days from receipt to issue a final determination of National Register listing.

The H.M. Smith General Merchandise and Fonthill Post Office serves as an illustration of a rural country store with an attached post office dating back to the early 20th century. It symbolizes the influence these establishments had on both the commercial and social aspects of rural agricultural communities in Russell County from 1914 to 1973. This site was recognized as a Kentucky Landmark in 2003.
