Silent City 2023: Professor and Mrs. A.H. Ballard

J.D. and Ellen Zornes portrayed Professor and Mrs. A. H. Ballard in front of the large crowd of folks who came to walk the historic Columbia Cemetery in Silent City last week. The notes from their presentation follow:

Professor and Mrs. A. H. Ballard

I love to come here to this Silent City where I can visit several of my brothers, their wives and my cousins all together here in the same place. Of course, my parents are buried at Crocus, where I was born.

I was born Mary Patience but was called "Mollie" Miller on January 16, 1870, in Crocus, Adair County, Kentucky. I was the 4th child of 11 and the 1st daughter of James Preston Miller, Sr.and Sarah Ann McClure Miller. My mother, Sarah McClure Miller, grew up in Swan Pond Bottom which was on a bend in the Cumberland River of Russell County, not too far from Creelsboro and Crocus.

Shot - Stabbed - Hanged - and More on the Public Square

By Mike Watson

A unique walking tour of the Public Square in Columbia will highlight a few of the many incidents that have occurred on--and just off--the Town Square, illustrating its rich history. Just as the title states, there will be incidents of our varied past illustrated, some in graphic detail.

The group will form at the Annex steps, on the corner of the Square and Greensburg Street, and proceed around the Square, at 7pmCT on the evening of Friday, October 27, 2023.

The tour will be led by Mike Watson and Dave Thomas--fresh off the Lanterns & Tombstones Tours and Silent City Tours. This is an educational, historical walk back into the wild years of early Columbia, the Civil War, and more. It is not intended for small children, as it can be a bit gory.

For more information contact Mike Watson at the Adair Genealogy & History Research Center, 270-380-1024, or by email at adairgenealogy@gmail.com.
