The sculpture, which stands at the entrance of the Parnell Family Stadium, was unveiled during the College's 92nd Homecoming celebration in a surprise ceremony before the football game kickoff.

Governor presents over $9.5M in awards to benefit Adair Co.

Governor joins state, local officials to break ground on natural gas lines that will support local business, Adair County Schools, new subdivision

From Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

On Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023, Gov. Andy Beshear joined state and local officials to present more than $9.5 million in funding to support natural gas lines, high-speed internet access, clean water, economic development, infrastructure, tourism and more in Adair County.

These announcements build on the county's momentum, with Phillips Tank & Structure, a nationwide tank construction contractor, having announced last week plans to build a $2.76 million fabrication shop that will create 20 new full-time jobs in the Columbia area.

"Adair County's economy is booming. Last week, Phillips Tank & Structure invested $2.76 million in this community, creating 20 jobs for our people. Today, we're celebrating another $9.5 million in investment from my administration, and breaking ground on natural gas lines that will support local businesses, public schools, new housing and more," Gov. Beshear said. "This is a great day for all of Kentucky because Adair's success builds on the incredible wins we're seeing across the commonwealth."

"Every dollar announced today will make someone's life better," said Adair County Judge/Executive Larry Bryant. "These kinds of investments serve every citizen of Adair County and secure a brighter future for our people. We appreciate the state's support as we work to improve our infrastructure and bring more people and businesses to our communities."

Kentucky Color Past: Autumn Dogwoods

By Billy Joe Fudge

These are photos of the fruit and leaves of Flowering Dogwood. These are native Dogwood which I dug from a grown up field (young forest) during the 90's. The fruit is another example of drupe. Drupe is a hard seed that is surrounded by a fleshy fruit i.e. apples, pears, peaches, etc. There is a particular stage of development when squirrels really like Dogwood fruit.

The leaves of Flowering Dogwood can be just about any hue of red running from the pink (I think) in this photo to a black purple. The leaves are a great example of a simple pinnate leaf. Simple just means that the leaf has no leaflets and pinnate means that the veins or ribs of the leaf run out into the leaf at varing points from the center spine of the leaf, much like our ribs grow out at varying points from our spine.

The accompanying photos are from way back in 2009, which marks Billy Joe's earliest submission to Columbia Magazine about Autumn Dogwoods. Another great read, from fall 2012, is Kentucky Color - Dogwood Prelude to Autumn and Winter.

Kentucky State Police to Participate in Operation SafeDRIVE

From Sergeant Jason Morris

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky State Police (KSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement will participate in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Operation SafeDRIVE (Distracted Reckless Impaired Visibility Enforcement) from October 3-5, 2023. This enforcement campaign targets unsafe driving behavior that often leads to crashes involving passenger cars and commercial vehicles. It complements national efforts to educate all drivers on safely sharing roads with large trucks.

The national SafeDRIVE initiative cracks down on dangerous interstate driving behaviors such as aggressive driving, speeding, tailgating, failing to wear a seat belt, distracted driving, and driving under the influence. During this effort, KSP Commercial Vehicle Inspectors will open scale facilities, ensuring commercial drivers follow safety regulations, including hours of service compliance, commercial driver license compliance, medical certification, and commercial motor vehicle credentialing.
