KY Wildfire Hazard Season Begins Oct. 1

From John Mura/Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear and Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Goodman are urging Kentuckians to be alert as the fall wildfire hazard season begins October 1, bringing outdoor burning restrictions to the state.

"We want to do everything we possibly can to keep all our Kentucky families safe, so we are asking everyone to use caution and be alert this wildfire season," Gov. Beshear said. "Let's do what we do best: Work together to keep our neighbors safe."

The commonwealth's outdoor burning law (KRS149.400) prohibits burning between the hours of 6am and 6pm local time, if the fire is within 150 feet of any woodland, brushland or fields containing dry grass or other flammable materials. These restrictions are in effect every fall (Oct. 1 - Dec. 15) and spring (Feb. 15 - April 30) to help prevent wildfires.

Directions and exact locations, please...

Locations and directions - or the lack thereof - have been frustrating readers of Columbia Magazine - it's hard to find a place when the location is so new it's not GPS-able and there are no signs out front. Two announcements have required research:

1) Gov. Andy Beshear's announcement visit coming up on Tuesday at "3211 Adair Veterans Memorial Highway." The subject of his announcement is a secret, according to both the Mayor and the Judge Executive, but when the public is invited to a location, it should be findable. UPDATE: "...3211 Adair Veterans Memorial Highway is just past the Burkesville Street intersection on the Bypass. The presentation will be set up on the back entrance off of Hudson Street..."

2) Citizens Park: the newest City park, where signage is not yet placed to guide visitors. This one also got 'what is it' and 'how do you get there' questions and this is a tough one.

Swimming: LWC 2023-24 Men's and Women's Preview

The 2023-24 Lindsey Wilson men's and women's swim season is on track to begin this weekend at the Holloway Natatorium with the 11th Annual Dr. Dillery Fall Frenzy. The first session begins at 5pmCT on Friday and then resumes on Saturday morning at 9amCT.

The Blue Raiders enter the new campaign on the heels of a perfect dual-meet effort during last season, but according to head coach Alicia Kemnitz, that feat will not be as easy this time.

"I completely revamped our schedule and made it much more difficult in every way I could," explained Kemnitz. "Our swimmers need to compete against other top swimmers, and our schedule last year did not afford us many of those opportunities."

Letter: Feather could be from woodpecker

Larry Clark writes:
On my drive home from down at the Mt. Carmel boat ramp the other morning, I saw a pileated woodpecker. I was slow on the shutter button, so I didn't get a picture. Its size is sixteen to nineteen inches long. It was a beautiful sight, since I've not seen one in a long while. I went to the bird feather site and found some similar to the feather that was found on the walking path. It may be a woodpecker feather.
Comments re: Mystery in the new Citizens Park
Thanks, Larry! We were guided along the trail in Citizens Park by the sounds of a woodpecker at work and it could well have been the one who left the feather for discovery by explorers. - LW
