New drug warning: Xylazine mixed in fentanyl Adair County's WATCH (working actively toward community health) Coalition met for interagency information sharing on September 14, 2013. Updates included a new drug warning from Adanta alerting providers to the risks of xylazine, a non-opioid agent increasingly being found in combination with opioids such as fentanyl. Xylazine, which has not been approved by the FDA for use in humans, can cause severe circulatory changes with devastating effects on human tissue leading to painful open lesions, necrosis, and potentially limb loss. Xylazine is known as "tranq" or "tranq dope" in the illicit drug market. Students invited to decorate snow plows for safety High school students across the Commonwealth are sending the public safe driving messages for snow and ice season through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's new statewide Paint the Plow program. The cabinet provides snowplow blades, which students decorate with messages that promote safe driving habits during inclement winter weather and prepare students to operate vehicles responsibly as they become eligible to drive. National Child Passenger Safety Week is Sept. 17-23 Parents and caregivers urged to keep kids safe in vehicles From Erin G. Eggen Frankfort, KY - Each year, National Child Passenger Safety Week aims to increase awareness for parents and caregivers about the importance of correctly buckling kids in the right seats for their age and size. It complements Gov. Andy Beshear's Better Kentucky Plan, in which the safety of everyone on Kentucky streets and roads is a top priority. "As a dad, I know how hard parents work to help keep children safe, especially on our roadways," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "While this week reminds us to take the proper precautions to keep our kids safe if faced with the unimaginable, our goal is to instill this knowledge and raise awareness year-round." Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for children, and the latest research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that 46% of car seats are misused. Common issues are children being in the wrong type of car seat for their age and size, and car seats being installed improperly -- both of which leave children vulnerable to injury in a crash.
