Roy Columbus (R.C.) Gabehart, 75, Knifley, KY (1948-2023)

Roy Columbus "R.C." Gabehart of Knifley passed away peacefully on Friday, September 15, 2023, at his home in Knifley after a lengthy illness. He was 75 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 11amCT on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at the Purdy Separate Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Eastridge Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Monday from 4pmCT until 8pmCT, and will continue Tuesday morning until 9amCT at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home. Visitation will continue at the church from 9amCT until 11amCT on Tuesday.

Rays of sunshine in the shadows of the Great Depression

The early 1930s saw the Great Depression continuing to wreak havoc with high unemployment and weak manufacturing, among other signs of a gravely ill economy. Still, Adair County -- and Columbia in particular -- saw many changes for the better from 1931 through 1933.

A full page piece published in the August 18, 1933 edition of a Madisonville newspaper, The Hustler, headlined (perhaps a bit over-optimistically) "Business Upturns All Over Kentucky," accentuated positive news from several Kentucky cities and counties.

KSP Post 15 troopers honored at sworn award ceremony

On September 14, 2023, Lt. Governor Coleman and the Kentucky State Police (KSP) honored 76 troopers and officers who wear the badge of honor to serve and protect Kentucky's 120 counties with a mission of creating a better, safer Kentucky. The awards presented were for acts of bravery and service that occurred in 2022.

Two troopers from the Post 15 area were included in those honors:
  • Trooper Austin Mattingly was named 2022 Post 15 Trooper of the Year. Trooper Mattingly is a 2-year veteran of KSP assigned to Post 15 Columbia.
  • Detective Bramlett Burton was named 2022 Post 15 Detective of the Year. Detective Burton is a 20-year veteran of KSP assigned to Post 15 Columbia.
Post 15 Commander Captain Bradly Stotts said, "I commend Detective Burton and Trooper Mattingly for their hard work and dedication to the agency. The excellent performance they exhibit on a daily basis is the embodiment of what it is to be a Trooper."

LCDHD maintains National Accreditation status

Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Somerset, KY - The Lake Cumberland District Health Department (LCDHD) today announced it has successfully completed a review process to maintain national accreditation status through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). In maintaining its accreditation status for another five years, LCDHD has demonstrated that it meets PHAB's quality standards and measures and has the capacity to continue to evolve, improve and advance to continue improving the health of the residents of the Lake Cumberland District.

The non-profit PHAB works to advance and transform public health practice by championing performance improvement, strong infrastructure, and innovation. PHAB's accreditation program sets standards against which the nation's governmental public health departments can continuously improve the quality of their services and performance.

"We are so pleased to again be recognized by PHAB for achieving national standards that foster effectiveness and promote continuous quality improvement," said LCDHD Executive Director Amy Tomlinson. "We hope this announcement will reassure our community, partner organizations, funders and elected officials that the services we provide are as responsive as possible to the needs of our community.

Special called ACMS SBDM Council meeting

Adair County Middle School's School-Based Decision Making Council will be having a special-called meeting at 3:30pmCT on Monday, September 18, 2023. The meeting will be held in Room 138 of Adair County Middle School, 322 General John Adair Drive, Columbia, KY.

The purpose of the special-called meeting is to interview for vacant coaching positions.

Outhouse race is on for Pumpkin Festival 2023

Let the planning begin. If you like a challenge, gather your friends, family, and co-workers, build an Outhouse (unless you have one stored out back), then enter the Outhouse Race sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce for the Pumpkin Festival in Edmonton, October 7, 2023.

Last year the Outhouse Race returned to the festival and the crowd lined the streets cheering for their favorite team. We hope to have more entries this year and there will be no entry fee. Details follow below.
