Payroll tax passed at August Fiscal Court meeting Vicky Pike reports that the half a percent payroll tax passed on the second reading with a unanimous vote at the August 22, 2023 Fiscal Court meeting. This means the tax will be assessed on all who get a payroll check from an Adair County employer. In the months since taking office Adair County Judge Executive Larry Russell Bryant had originally asked for a one percent occupational tax, then negotiated to three quarters but both got voted down. Adair County showcased at Frankfort EDA gathering On Monday, August 21, 2023 the Columbia-Adair County Economic Development Authority traveled to Frankfort to showcase Columbia and Adair County to the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development. Heather Spoon, consultant for the EDA, delivered the message of community readiness, "We are ready. We may not have every little detail addressed, but we are more ready now than we have ever been. We have the land, we have the utilities and infrastructure, and we have the workforce." T.J. Health Columbia Lunch and Learn: Diabetes 101 From Stacey Biggs T.J. Health Columbia will be hosting a Lunch and Learn starting at NoonCT on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, the T.J. Health Columbia Hospital on Westlake Drive. This month's topic will be Diabetes 101. The guest speaker will be Linnea Tarter, APRN with T.J. Regional Health. This is a free event and a light lunch and drinks will be provided. One CEU will be awarded to nursing professionals who attend. Scams - Megan Gullett says one in five will be hit One person in five is a victim of a scam with the average loss of $1,000 each. These statistics were presented by Russell County FCS Agent Megan Gullett in a free workshop at the Adair Extension Office last week on how to stay safe and avoid scams. She says, first of all, never, ever say the word "yes" in answer to a caller asking, is this you? That one word can be used in your voice to sound as if you were making purchases. Adair Co. Grand Jury returns indictments on Aug 17 On Thursday, August 17, 2023, the Adair County Circuit Court Grand Jury met and handed down indictments against 5 individuals from Columbia and Burkesville, KY. Charges included murder, possession, electronic inducement of a minor, promoting contraband, and tampering with physical evidence. NOTE: Indictments are considered formal charges. An indictment is not a finding of guilt. An individual charged by indictment is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty at some later criminal proceeding. KSP: Focus on Brake Safety for Commercial Vehicles From Officer Stevie Douglas Frankfort, KY - This week kicks off Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's (CVSA) weeklong brake safety inspection, education and enforcement initiative. Kentucky State Police (KSP) Commercial Vehicle Inspectors are joining others from Canada, Mexico and across the U.S. to conduct brake-related inspections to improve highway safety. In addition to checking the brake-system operation, inspectors will also examine the condition of brake pads for cracks, loose, worn or missing brake pads.
