Carol Perkins: Party Crashers Previous Column: Skirts and Totes for OCC By Carol Perkins I have no memory of ever crashing a party. It took me all these years to cross that off my "to do" list. Never did I dream it would be at a class reunion for my former students. The Class of '78. When one of the class members text me about attending, I accepted. Susan Chambers and I planned to go together and reunite with many of this group whom I had not seen since they graduated. The one who invited us was the only one to know our plan. We dressed up in housecoats, house shoes, rolled-down socks, shawls, and hair sticking up like we had slept on it, and headed to the party with our walkers. Carolyn Best, also invited, joined us in her attire. We waited until the class was seated in the "old section" of the former MCHS gym (locals will understand what I mean) and made our entrance, yelling at each other to hurry and pretending we were going to a visitation, with Susan asking who died. Letter: Courthouse Clock Reno Robin Smith writes: In regards to those interested in restoring the courthouse clock, I encourage the community to consider the same company who designed Lindsey Wilson College's Hendrickson clock tower. The Electric Time Company, www.electrictime.com, would be a great place to begin talks about what can be done for our beautiful courthouse. I'm sure a replacement would be costly but it is a project that could bring our community together.Comments re: Updating the Courthouse Clock Tower 2023-08-19 10:42:14 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Prolonged heat wave likely to begin on Sunday From Mike Keltner, Director Adair Co. Emergency Management The National Weather Service in Louisville sent word this morning that a prolonged late summer heat wave is very likely to begin Sunday. Confidence remains very high that we'll have highs in the lower 90s on Sunday, and then mid- to upper-90s each day this coming week. The heat index will likely exceed 100 degrees on multiple days. We could see Heat Advisory headlines, or if confidence increases, several consecutive days of the heat index reaching 105 could trigger an Excessive Heat Warning. While this will not be the most intense heat wave, it will be an extended period of hot temperatures. Have a plan to take heat related precautions, and check on your neighbors, especially if they are at greater risk for heat illnesses. 2023-08-19 10:37:31 | Comments | Printable version

Letter: Thank you to Amber Hobaugh Re: Letter: Response to Mr. Flatt By Victoria Pike I would like to personally thank Amber for her well written, heart felt response to the current situation in Adair county concerning the occupational tax. First and foremost I will continue to attend and serve our county anyway I can. That includes voicing my opinion when I feel it necessary. I will not be silenced by magistrate Flatt. Thank you Amber for defending my right to speak out. I'm a tax-paying citizen of Adair County. I have that right, Mr. Flatt. And yes, I will continue to sit on the front row of our fiscal court meetings and when it's my turn in citizens comments, will voice that opinion. It's my opinion that most of our county supports the higher tax because they know the dire situation our county workers are in financially. Most are highly trained workers we are losing to fast food restaurants that are paying $3 plus more an hour than what they earn now. This is unacceptable. People I'm talking to support the .75 tax despite what you say you are hearing. They know our county is in a mess and want to see it grow and progress and yes have a rainy day fund if we have a disaster strike.
