How do we know it's time for lunch without the clock

In John Hunter Walker's youth in the 60s, he knew it was coming up on lunch time by the sounds he could hear in the field that began with the chiming of the Adair County Courthouse clock.

He remembers helping his Dad, Pete, work the Joe Russell Barbee crops on top of the hill above Bull Run. John was of age that he got to drive the Farmall Cub Tractor to plow tobacco.

The clock on the Courthouse would chime 12 times every day. At the same time, Jack Williams would release steam from his laundry powering a steam whistle that would go off. The chimes and the whistle were immediately followed by every single dog in town beginning their howling chorus.

Bat bite requires trip to ER, Rabies treatment

By Donna Rieder

What I thought was a leaf in Ivy's water bucket was actually a bat, and when I scooped it out, it bit me. There are only 6 recorded instances of humans surviving Rabies.

Symptoms can occur within 1 day, and since Rabies is fatal (THE most deadly disease in the world), if anyone gets bit or scratched by a wild animal, get to the Emergency Room as soon as possible and get the vaccines started. Emergency rooms are required to have the vaccine on hand at all times, but not doctor's offices nor clinics.

I got bit on Monday and started the series right away.

Governor unveils Education First budget plan

From Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - On Wednesday, August 16, 2023, Gov. Andy Beshear outlined his "Education First" budget plan, which provides an 11% pay raise for teachers and all school personnel - the largest single pay raise for public school educators in 40 years - and fully funds universal pre-K.

The Governor's plan also fully funds teacher pensions and student transportation; ensures no health insurance premium increase for educators; provides teachers student loan forgiveness; supports professional development; funds textbooks; boosts mental health services and will help build new career and technical education centers.

"We must invest more in public education. Our teachers are not paid what they are worth, and every child deserves a chance at true prosperity," Gov. Beshear said.
