Carol Perkins: Skirts and Totes for OCC Previous Column: The Keys By Carol Perkins I am addicted to thrift stores. I frequent those in Bowling Green, Campbellsville, Columbia, and Glasgow. I stopped at thrift stores on the trips we made this spring. I know where they are en route to Carla's in Tennessee. I've been to those in Texas. Why? My seek and find has a purpose beyond myself. I discovered that by cutting sheets into rectangles (36" or 42" by 18" in case you want to sew, too), I can make pretty elastic waist skirts for the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Mission (part of the Samaritan's Purse) in which our county (and many others) is heavily involved. A simple elastic waist skirt and a homemade tote (450 is our goal) would thrill girls in these third-world countries where clothing is a luxury. Nu-Art Studio, August 1943 By JIM Mr. and Mrs. E. Emerick opened the Nu-Art Studio, "formerly Montgomery Studio," in mid-August 1942 "next door to the Margie Ann Beauty Shop. In June 1943, the Emericks moved the establishment into the quarters formerly occupied by Miss Jones' store in the south corner of the square. Said The News, "The building...has been redecorated for the new occupants, and Mr. Emerick, owner of Nu-Art Studio, states that in the new and more spacious location, the firm will be better prepared to offer a more complete service than in the past."Mr. & Mrs. W.R. Wooten sold their Triangle grocery store in late 1945 or very early 1946 and shortly thereafter, Mr. Emerick sold his lease for the main floor of Murray Building to them and moved his photography studio to the second floor. More than 6,000 new KY voters added in July From Michon Lindstrom Frankfort, KY - Secretary of State Michael Adams announced that Kentucky voter registration continues to increase ahead of the November election, with 6,149 new voters added in July. "New voter registrations have now outpaced voter removals for the fifth straight month," Adams noted. "In spite of, or perhaps because of, political polarization, the highest rate of voter registration is not among Republicans or Democrats, but Independents."
