MasterWorks Festival wraps up first year at CU By Gerard Flanagan, news writer and photographer, Office of University Communications One of the premier music festivals in the United States has completed its inaugural year at its new home, Campbellsville University. CU hosted the MasterWorks Festival for its 27th year. The festival brought 103 students from 24 states and five countries for a month of classical arts training centered on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Festival included 45 faculty, six guest artists and seven staff members. Agnes Marie Beard, 100, Russell County, KY (1923-2023) Agnes Marie Beard, of Jamestown, KY passed away from this life on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. She was 100 years of age. Born July 7, 1923, in Adair County, she was a daughter of the late Sethie and Gertie Holt Shepherd. Agnes loved to quilt and crochet and made many beautiful handmade items over the years. She was a wonderful cook and made the best fried chicken and hoecakes in the world. Agnes was a member of Jamestown Christian Church. She taught Sunday School classes for many years, as well as helping with Bible School. The Bible was a very important part of her life, and she had read hers through numerous times. To all her grandchildren and beyond, she was just the very best "Nannie" that one could be. Bingocize part two starts on September 25 From Dylan Gentry Bingocize is a low-impact exercise program that offers real prizes, potential health benefits, and increased knowledge of health-related topics. Participants will play bingo, do short, low-resistance exercises, answer trivia, and repeat. The winner of bingo will receive a small prize. There will be two sessions per week on Mondays and Wednesdays. Each session will be held at the Extension Office at no charge. Worried you will miss a day? Mavis Marlene Cooper, 85, Russell County, KY (1937-2023) Mavis Marlene Cooper, of the Damron Creek Community of Russell County, passed from this life on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at her home. She was 85 years of age. She spent many years working in different garment factories in the Russell County area. For some time, she owned her own Upholstery shop, "The Renewal Shop", where her workmanship was known across multiple states. She was a "jill-of-all-trades"; she could build cabinets, run water lines and tackle electrical projects. Ms. Mavis loved going fishing and her Thursday nights out with family, with a different restaurant to try every week. She made sure hers was a close-knit family. CPD: Meth arrest By Officer Adam Cravens, PIO Columbia Police Department The Columbia Police Department responded to Family Dollar on Jamestown Street on Wednesday night, August 9, 2023, initially for a welfare check. Upon making contact, male subject was found to have an active felony warrant out of Russell Springs and was taken into custody. While on scene, a female was behaving erratically and nervously around officers. A vehicle search yielded findings of drug paraphernalia and suspected methamphetamine.
