Tourism industry celebrates 2022, best year on record

Kentucky Tourism generated $12.9 billion in economic impact and 91,668 jobs in 2022. For Adair County numbers, see Paige Nickel's tourism update to the Chamber of Commerce Thursday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 8, 2023) - Gov. Andy Beshear today announced that 2022 was the best year on record for Kentucky tourism, with $12.9 billion generated in economic impact and 91,668 jobs. The Governor joined state tourism leaders at Lexington's Crank & Broom Craft Ice Cream in the city's Distillery District to celebrate the record-breaking year, which saw visitation surpass pre-pandemic volumes.

"Tourism is essential to Kentucky and that is why I have made it a priority to support this industry. It's thrilling to see our hard work pay off in such a historic way," said Gov. Beshear. "From horse country and outdoor adventure to history, arts, culture and our world-famous bourbon, Kentucky has a little something for every traveler - but what really sets us apart is the hospitality and kindness of the hardworking Kentuckians in this industry."

Free Class: Guide to Yard Sales and Consignment Shops

From Dylan Gentry

Many of us have items in our homes that have been kept long beyond their usefulness. These items often clutter our houses while we scratch our heads, wondering what to do with them. Many times, clothes, furniture, or odd knickknacks are still in good condition, yet we no longer have a use for them or want to downsize. On the other hand, many of us also have upcoming purchases, such as back-to-school clothes, home redecorating, or furnishing a college apartment, that make us wonder whether there is a cheaper option.

Checking out local yard sales and consignment shops might help you save substantially and even earn a little extra cash. Join the Adair County Extension Office at 10amCT on Friday, August 11, 2023, for this free class. Sheila McGaha, from the Lake Cumberland Community Action Agency, will be a special guest presenter.

The Adair County Extension Office is located at 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY.

Guffey selected for Seasoned Spirits exhibit

From Allie Martin

Louisville, KY - Bourbon with HeART has announced its fourth art exhibit this year, "Seasoned Spirits," celebrating the elegance and wisdom of age. The exhibit will showcase 50 bourbon barrel heads, each intricately hand-painted by local Kentuckiana artists aged 50 and above.

Among the artists selected for the show is former Burkesville Mayor Bill Guffey. Guffey, 59, has been a visual artist for 15 years. He uses oil paint to reflect the world around him. Combining his love for art, bourbon, and Kentucky, he creates pieces reflecting the state's unique charm. As he ages, Bill cherishes watching his family grow.

Starting on September 1, the exhibit will run for six weeks and will be on display at the CAMBRiA Hotel, 120 S Floyd St, Louisville, KY, on the historic Whiskey Row. For more information on Bourbon with HeART and the "Seasoned Spirits" exhibit, visit www.bourbonwithheart.org.

Letter: Yard sale photo brings back memories

Robert Cumming writes:
Looking at Linda Waggener's 127 Yard Sale photo, I instantly recognized my wife Laura Miller's former orchard property. It was on her family's place across from the radio station in Russell Springs. Before they sold their farm I set up a 127 vendors "stand" a few times under the shade of those orchard trees. They were always a great spot on those hot August afternoons.
