Looking for dog owner

Roger D. Smith, DMD writes:
We have a small white puppy with tan spots that showed up at our house on Conover Lane last Saturday. He seems to be about 5 to 6 months old and very obedient and he might be part Jack Russell. We know that he is probably house trained.

We don't want to take him to the shelter and we need to find his owner. Please give us a call at 270-384-5155 if you are his parents.

Letter: Adair County Courthouse Wings

Richard Raines writes:
I would like to clarify some information about the wings on the courthouse discussed in the article you published the other day. I remember I was in 8th grade when renovation of the courthouse began, and I remember the building as it was before that renovation started. It wasn't like the 1942 picture that was recently published that was taken from Greensburg Street, there were wings present before the 1974 renovation. My parents moved to Adair County in fall of 1962 and as far back as I can remember there were wings on the building. On the Burkesville Street side were two wings that were slightly than the ones that were just removed, and they were removed and replaced by larger wings during the renovation. The Campbellsville Street side had a long addition along it, and actually there was a few feet more added on to each end of that side, making it symmetrical with the new Burkesville Street side wings if you look at the building from the Jamestown Street or Greensburg Street entrances to the square. The additions were just like the wings that were just removed in that they were flat roofed, but they were all fairly utilitarian with no trim along the edge of the roof or around the windows to match the window trim of the origional part of the building. As I remember, the renovation was completed about 1976, and it really improved the looks of the outside of the building.

I am glad to see the wings coming off of the building since the courthouse isn't in use now, and I know that a flat roof causes big maintance issues. I haven't been down to the square to see the building in person since the additions came off, but from what the pictures show, it is going to be an improvement to the building's appearance.

Now, I just hope someone will take the initiative to get the clock (along with its bell) running again. I really miss that.

Does anyone else remember earlier wings on the courthouse? Perhaps like the photo posted from Mayor Hoots' collection? Use our Contact Form to weigh in...

Happy to have JOY Ministry on my side

By Mary Bardin

I currently work as Targeted Case Manager/Community Support Coordinator. This is a big title, but means helping people when they are at their lowest point and needs some assistance to get through a single day. One day at a time! There are days when I think I need help getting through the day. I know when I call JOY Ministries I will be able to get friendly willing people to do everything they can possibly do to help me. If JOY Ministry can't help, they are going to provide some other resources that might be able to help.

Slow down and move over for emergency vehicles

From Erin Eggen/Capt. Paul Blanton/Lori Weaver Hawkins

Frankfort, KY - In an effort to protect those who protect us, Kentuckians are urged to slow down and move over if safely possible when passing emergency vehicles.

"Every day on our roadways, emergency responders and public safety personnel put their lives at risk to protect the citizens of the commonwealth, and it's important to do what we can go to support them in return," said Gov. Andy Beshear, who has made all aspects of highway safety a top administration priority. "Please slow down and move over to help keep these dedicated heroes safe as they work to protect the lives of Kentuckians."

To raise awareness, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is joining the Kentucky State Police (KSP) and AAA to promote the "Slow Down and Move Over" message through Aug. 15, 2023.

Tommy Druen: The legendary Tony Bennett

Previous Column: The changing TV Dad

By Tommy Druen

Change is an eternal part of our world's fabric. Since the first time a stone was used as a tool, we've constantly sought progress, striving for greater heights with each passing day. That's something we all understand and accept.

However, amidst the ever-changing landscape, there are certain matters we expect to remain constant. Ideas like original sin, the inevitability of death and taxes, and even the familiar predictability of turning on the television.

Let me tell you a tale about a bygone era that seems so distant now, a time when what was expected tended to happen, a time that seems distant now - The 90s.

Quarterly magazine has Gradyville ties

Kari Barr writes:
Hello Columbia! I'm new to Kentucky. We live a little beyond the Gradyville area. My husband Donny still works in Washington State, as soon as that house sells he will join me here as well. We also have a son attending South Central in Glasgow. I am a writer and sometimes publisher. I recently created a new magazine that I will publish quarterly. The first issue can be found on my website intangience.net. Those who have kindles can even get the magazine ebook for free at amazon.com.

I'd like to invite local writers to submit items related to the theme of future issues as detailed on the submission page. Note we cannot pay for work at this time. But it is free publicity. We take both poetry and short stories. The upcoming issue to be published in September will be about winter in general but a preference for fiction in a dystopian world would make us happier.
Kari says the next issue of Intangience will be published by September 30, 2023, and the deadline for submissions is August 30, 2023.

Letter: Frustrated with Fiscal Court!

Marsha Collins writes:
I'm in total agreement with Mary. I watched the Fiscal Court meeting and so frustrated with the whole thing!!! My takeaway from the whole fiasco is the magistrates don't want to do anything in agreement with Larry Russell Bryant. This animosity shows how childish and immature they are. Their elected position is to work for the good of the whole county!! And, they need to keep in mind that they were elected into their position and they can be taken out of their position. Maybe not today or tomorrow but it can/will happen. To me, at the final minutes of the meeting, for the magistrates to "low ball" the occupational tax would be considered a slap in the face to the residents of Adair County, and totally understand why LRB voted "no".

I work and have worked in Russell County most of my work life and pay occupational taxes for the residents of Russell County to benefit from. Why can't Adair County residents not benefit from an occupational tax? If the magistrates are really listening to their constituents, they should have approved the .75% occupational tax. This does not affect any resident that is not working in Adair County so it would not affect any retired or disabled residents.

The actions of the Fiscal Court magistrates are proof of why Adair County cannot move forward and make advancements for its residents. The city of Columbia is making the most advancements/improvements because of the foresight of the city's leadership. I feel the Fiscal Court needs to take notice of how it works when everyone works for the best of the people in Adair County.
