Letter: Jonathan Gold at Naval Academy

Dave Rosenbaum writes:
Very good to see that Jonathan Gold is entering the Naval Academy. I visited the Naval Academy a couple of years ago. It just made a fellow feel good to walk around and observe all those young men and women. I know that Jonathan will make a great Naval Officer. Adair County kids can excel wherever they are.

How the EDA works in Adair Co.

By Heather Spoon

I've heard about some woefully incorrect assumptions floating around town regarding the money and jobs coming to the Green River Commerce Park, and I would like to take a few moments to explain the process and clear up any confusion.

Economic development, especially industrial development, supports job creation; but it also brings so much more to our community, like large amounts of capital investment, i.e dollars. Last week, the Governor's office announced Pennyroyal Barrel Co.'s intent to locate right here in Adair County. PBC will be investing $8.25 MILLION dollars INTO Adair County and obligating to create 10 new jobs, at a minimum, for our citizens, with wages of approximately $18/hr. It seems some people think that the EDA gave money to get jobs. But that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Carol Perkins: Barbie

Previous Column: Coughing Your Head Off

By Carol Perkins

"Barbie." Some names need nothing further to identify them than their first name. Cher, Hillary, Beyonce', Barbra (her spelling), and Madonna, plus Oprah, Usher, Bono, etc. Barbie is one of those names.

First sold in 1958, long after I stopped playing with my baby dolls, Ruth Handler created the first big girl doll that looked like an adult rather than a baby or a girl. I wish I had thought of her!

A few of us decided we would see the movie. At first, I thought it was for young girls, but then I learned from those who had seen it that it was PG-13. Really? The market, I thought, would be for girls who still play with their Barbies. So, off we go with popcorn in hand and settle in for our personal experience.

Never know what you'll find on a Saturday afternoon in Creelsboro

By Terry Ausmun

Just this past Saturday I had finished mowing the lawn and filled up my mower and returned it to the machinery shed and while there went over to the chicken coop to check their water and feed as well as eggs.

Pulled 3 eggs out of nest box number 1, put them aside, and reopened the nest lid for nest number 2. At a glance something wasn't right. Immediately looked over at #3 and it didn't pass inspection either. Like others, I can deal with snakes if I see it ahead of time and I had on that occasion. So I grabbed a feed sack and finally was able to extract the snake and and sack it. Took it to my neighbor's place for a photo and measurement. I would guess the snake to weigh 7-8 pounds. The measurement was difficult, but Mr. Perkins, my neighbor who handles a tape measure and phone camera every day, called it out at 6' 2". Of course we couldn't get an accurate length as the snake refused to have its pictures taken without curls.

Yes I did a "catch and release," by relocating the snake about 5 miles down the road. Never know what you'll find on a Saturday afternoon in Creelsboro.
