Poem puzzle solved by several who recognized the first verse

The puzzle of the poem that John Walker remembered the first verse of was solved by several who knew it, and the grandson of the poet sent a photo of the framed print.

Mike Bell wrote, "The poem is called "The Whittlers". If I remember correctly, there was a photograph of the men whittling on the benches on the Jamestown side. My grandfather, Marvin "Bug Eye" Bell was among them, swapping knives, telling tells, spitting tobacco spit, and picking on the other whittlers and every grandson that stopped by. I do miss that cedar smell and their laughter."

Ellen Zornes wrote that the poem, printed with a picture of the historic Adair County Courthouse, hangs in the Columbia Adair Chamber of Commerce office.

John M. Shelley III wrote, "He was my Grandfather, the first John Shelley. I am the third and my son is the fourth." Thanks to his photo of the print we will print it and link to this news.

Letter: Taxes

Ann Pearson writes:
I was just wondering myself how much longer we have to keep paying this hospital tax. I've heard a number of people ask when will it be paid off as we've been doing this for forever. Does no one have to account to the tax payers when we ask how much is still owed?
