Warning off an unwanted visitor

2023-03-11 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
This trio captured the heart of Columbia Magazine reader Connie Slattery who mentioned she's had enough experience in photography to know how hard it could have been to capture them in action. The wind was at their backs ruffling feathers when they spotted the intruder. I was cowardly hiding in the car with the window down only enough to focus, and be ready to hit the gas if they got too close.

I've been fascinated by them since I was marked by one of their ancestors as a child visiting my best friend Faye in Knob Lick. Faye's grandmother Lucy Lambirth had geese like these, honking warriors, aggressively flying at and snapping any small humans moving around their yard. I learned there why Faye and I needed to play on the opposite side of the house to where they grazed. -- LW

From Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - On March 9, 2023, Gov. Andy Beshear, Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman and members of the Kentucky Commission on Women commemorated Women's History Month and announced the induction of new members to the Kentucky Women Remembered portrait exhibit in the state Capitol.

Members of the Kentucky Commission on Women unanimously recommended seven women to Gov. Beshear to be added to the exhibit, and the Governor announced all seven will be honored.

Carol Perkins: The Baby Visit

Previous Column: The Wind Beneath My Tree

By Carol Perkins

My nine-month-old great nephew, Sagan Monroe Thomas, lives in Florida. When his grandmother asked me to go with her for a visit, I didn't hesitate. We booked our flight and rented a car. I planned to stay in a hotel, but every room was booked. Later, as different people asked us if we were headed to Daytona for the races, I realized the 500 was "driving up" the demand. Sarah, my niece, didn't want me to get a room, vowing she had plenty of space, so my sister-in-law and I had a slumber party for three nights.

Because we three are seldom together, we talked like girlfriends. I tried to avoid making suggestions about Sagan's meals or his sleep patterns, but you know how hard that is! When they were concerned that he woke up three or four times during the night, I suggested keeping him up later. My kids never went to bed at seven o'clock. I also suggested a sleep specialist if all else failed, which I knew about because of another of my nieces who faced sleeping problems with her youngest.

Softball: Sizemore's walk-off gives LWC the split against Shawnee State

Sometimes it's not about how you start, it's how you finish, and such was the case for Za'Kiya Sizemore and the Lindsey Wilson softball team on Friday afternoon as the Blue Raiders picked up a two-game split with Shawnee State University (OH).

Sizemore finished the day 4-for-9 from the plate, but what is impressive is the fact that the fifth-year senior started 0-for-4, then rallied off four hits over her next five at-bats, including the walk-off home run in game two to give the local's their third conference win of the week.

All told, four Blue Raiders ended up with three or more hits on the day.
