Our next Strategic Leadership Team meeting will be March 7, 2023 at 6pmCT at the Adair County Extension Office on Fairground Street. Please join us and invite others to attend so we can hear from more voices.

By Sarah Hatton

Director of Secondary Instruction, Adair County Schools

Thank you so much for attending the SLT meeting on February 2. Wow! What about those kids? Their insights were so helpful in informing our work. Thank you for being such good listeners and note takers. Your identification of common themes in their comments will form the basis of the district's mission and vision for the next four years.

Here's Where Our Task Stands:

Data Collection - We have completed the data collection portion of our work together.

The Empathy Statements created in November, the User Statements compiled in December, the SWOT analysis done in January, and the information garnered from the student panel at the February meeting - all provide a clear picture of the Current State.

Freezer/Refrigerator safety after a power outage

From Dylan Gentry, County Extension Agent
Adair County Extension Office

Many in our area are still without power from Friday's storm. If you have questions about the food in your fridge/freezer still being safe, follow these helpful tips from the USDA.

Generally, frozen food in a full refrigerator freezer or chest freezer will keep for about two days if the power goes out and you do not open the door. It is important to note if the freezer is only half full, the food will only keep for one day without power. Refrigerated food will keep about four to six hours with no power. Opening the refrigerator or freezer doors lessens the time the food will safely keep.

Once the power returns, frozen food that has ice crystals or feels refrigerator-cold can be refrozen, but it may lose its nutrient content, color, texture and flavor. Cook food that is completely thawed but cold within 24 hours. Discard food with a strange odor or color or food that is thawed and has risen above room temperature for two hours or more.

Never taste questionable food. If you have doubts about whether it is safe to eat, it is better to throw it out than risk a food-borne illness.

For a list of specific foods and temperatures, download the Refrigerated Food During Power Outage Safety Chart (PDF) from foodsafety.gov.

Letter: Reasons that complaints could be justified

Robert Johnson writes:
My first thoughts on reading the article about social media complaints from the writer whom, in their words, "don't tolerate UGLY well" leave me with a few questions.

Were they ever without power? If without power, was it restored in a timely manner? Do they have small children whom need all the luxuries that electricity provides? Such as, warm meals (think of baby formula), and a warm home. Are they a person with a disability that requires electricity to power health care devices like oxygen tanks or a mobility device? The questions could go on and on but I would just be belaboring the point.

People often complain when they feel stressed due to hardships incurred brought on by means beyond their control. The daily news cycle is filled with politicians complaining about various issues of government. Are they being "UGLY" as well? Many may say yes, especially if they are not of the same political persuasion.

Anyway, some locals may have taken to social media because they felt the storm responses weren't timely, or a corporate entity was dragging their feet on allocating needed resources and manpower. All possibly done due to reasons given above. It doesn't make them crass or ugly; maybe they just felt desperate.
