Repairs take time, so be patient and be helpful

By Victoria Pike
Miss Vicky's Pampered Angus Ranch

Good Sunday morning all. We have survived the storm and power is being restored as fast as humanly possible. We have trees to clear and buildings to repair but we need to take time to be thankful it wasn't ice and snow with frigid temperatures to follow. Some seem to have forgotten this. It's March. It could have been so much worse.

I'm just a bit upset with a few that have decided to take to social media to complain about things not returning to normal once the winds died down. We are all human and can only do so much with the manpower we have. Help is arriving and electricity is being restored. Remember this didn't just happen to Adair County. It's going to take time.

Instead of complaining, get up and go out and help your friends and neighbors who might need help. Check on the elderly to see if they need food and water. Make a grocery run for them. Get a cooler and some ice for someone to store essential food in until their power is back. Lend a generator if you have one. Above all, don't sit on social media sites scanning to see where you can made negative "UGLY" comments about what hasn't been done or by who. I don't tolerate UGLY well.

It's a beautiful day now get out there and do good and stop trying to analyze every comment word by word. Please say a prayer for those out there trying there best to get things repaired and cleaned up. Have a nice day from the crew of the Pampered Angus. ---Vicky, Zippy, and Minnie

Renox Fire Tower

2023-03-05 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.
Billy Joe writes, "This is Renox Fire Tower on the knob that joins Adair, Cumberland and Metcalfe directly beneath the tower. It is 60 feet tall, while Big Knob Fire Tower in Pulaski County is 80 feet tall (and would have been a much more challenging climb for a severely overweight Ms Routon running for her life!)"

Great Wooded South: Adventure at Big Knob

The first installment in what we at CM hope will be a series of tales from Billy Joe's days with the Fire Patrol, makes for a great Sunday read.--PW.

By Billy Joe Fudge
Retired District Forester

Chapter I
"KGW 750 Big Knob to Campbellsville, 10-8," blasted loud and clear from the old low band radio on a clear, warm, breezy and dry morning in Pulaski County Kentucky. It is late March, in the middle of Spring fire season. 10-8 is radio mumbo jumbo for "in service" and Ms Routon was the first fire tower to sign in that morning.

Our dispatcher, Sharon, at the District office replied, "Campbellsville to Big Knob, 10-4 and... standby."

You could hear the nervous anticipation in Ms Routon's voice as she replied, "10-4, standing by!" Ms Routon had been manning the tower at Big Knob for a dozen years and she knew something was up. Big Knob was the tallest of some three dozen fire towers in the South Central District and she was proud as peaches of that claim to fame.

The radio traffic was intense as one tower after another signed in with Campbellsville. "KGW 750 Crocus Far Tire, 10-8" followed by "KGW 750 Gum Tree to Campbellsville, 10-8".

Campbellsville replied, "10-4 Hugh, 10-4 Gomer"! At this point things were way too busy to follow correct radio protocol and you could almost hear the number 2 pencil in Sharon's right hand racing across the radio log as her left hand keyed the microphone.

Jamestown family exploring need for a Christian school

Jeff Recker and his wife Madeline are exploring the idea of organizing a Christian school to serve the Adair/Russell area, because they have 4 young children between the ages of 8 and 3, and haven't found affordable options within within a 20-30 minute drive and in the same time zone.

After meeting with enthusiasm from a number of local parents, Recker has set up an online survey to determine the feasibility of an area Christian School at this link: https://s.surveyplanet.com/02ug3opa.

The Reckers moved to Jamestown 5 years ago. Jeff works for a Christian non-profit which provides medicine, food, shelter and many other services to children and families all over the world, while Madeline runs a small gift and jewelry shop on the Jamestown Square.
