Artist Karen Roland shares her path to Kentucky

The public is invited to view the plein air paintings of artist Karen Roland in the LWC Slider Hall Lucretia C. Begley Gallery. Her collection includes many area landmarks visitors will recognize. Below, she shares how she came to be here.

By Karen Roland

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, my love for horses inspired my constant drawing of them with occasional renderings of family pets, people and wildlife earning ribbons at the local fairs.

I earned my BFA from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana and began an art career in airbrushing at Astroworld in Houston, TX and later Dreamland Drive-In, Asheville, NC and Shipwreck Island at Panama City Beach - 30 years ago when I also received Best of Show for a colored pencil still-life at the Bay County Fair.

The truck and the building behind it

The van mentioned by Billy Joe Fudge (in the background of his 1976 photo sent in by Mike Watson) sat in front of the press room of Waggener Walker Newspapers on Jamestown Street in Columbia, a venture that was in business until just after the recession of late 70s, early 80s. God bless every person who helped make it work before moving on to brighter futures! Pieces of that experience would be incorporated into Columbia Magazine, South Central Printing, Printing Creations, The Adair Progress, The Farmers Pride/Community Voice, and more. The house beside the press room may have belonged to Lula Bell and George Simpson.

Letter: Woodpeckers protected

Marie Freeman writes:
I believe both of you are correct. They are not a migratory bird however they are protected under the migratory federal act. Most birds are protected

Almost all birds native to the United States, including their nests and eggs, are protected by a federal law that has been in place since 1918. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act protects more than a thousand species of birds, including woodpeckers. Don't let the name fool you though, protection is not limited to only individual birds or species that migrate.

Kentucky Color: The Noticer

By Billy Joe Fudge

Yes Pen, I do carry "The Noticer" label your Dad, Ed Waggener, put on me several years ago with some self gratification. However, noticing is not about The Noticer but about the noticed. So, I just can't help but wonder about "the hat" in the picture?!
