Remembering Mitzi Bault

By Ralph Waggener

My niece Mitzi Bault passed yesterday after 25 hard fault years of that evil Cancer! Mitzi has been told several times that she only had a couple of weeks or months to live, yet she had the stamina and will to live!

Never have I witnessed a person with such a drive as this little lady, I say little in stature but big in heart and the drive of a great war general! Her husband Ricky has been by her side throughout all of this and he has to be close to sainthood for all he has done!

Travel: Driving the Slot Canyon in Capitol Reef National Park

2022-11-23 - Capitol Reef National Park, Utah - Photo by Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.
Robert writes, "Driving along through the slot canyon. Road ends with a turn around, or you can park and continue for miles on foot. The only downside is you don't want to be caught on this road when it's raining... it becomes impassable. The park service recommends checking the weather forecast before you head down this road."

Abandoned dog gets a second chance at Thanksgiving

Thanks to the hard work of a network of local volunteers, one small dog is going to have a much happier Thanksgiving.

A month and a half ago, the dog's owners moved out of their mobile home in southern Adair County, leaving him stranded and alone. Neighbors pitched in to get the dog out and bring him food, and eventually word got to Sugarfoot Farm Rescue. Peg Schaeffer contacted local volunteer Lora Bell, who acted as "feet on the ground" to rescue the abandoned dog from the trailer.

Travel: Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

By Robert Ellis

In many ways Capitol Reef has that Zion National Park look and feel to it. While less popular, it is unique in its own way. I personally rate it very high and most definitely worth the time and effort to visit. In the heart of the park there's a 200 acre farm/orchard and buildings left over from early Mormon settlers.

Along with this, there's hiking trails, the popular Hickman Bridge Arch and a slot canyon you can travel through with your car. At the end of the drive when you can't go any further by vehicle, you can continue hiking the canyon for miles on foot.

Portions of Capitol Reef hosts the ever popular Burr and Cathedral Loop trails. Higher clearance, four wheel drive (or AWD) vehicles are highly recommended if you want to experience these two adventure trails.

Letter: Butch and Gayle Rogers

Mary Bardin writes:
This couple has been in Columbia spotlight for years. Both are distinguished, kind and compassionate , well respected couple. Butch has coached both of my children. One year, for some reason, all the boys on the team were from single parent homes with none to coach them. Me and another mom decided we would take a punch for the team (yea right). However, Butch decided he would do a better job and took the team.

A sport that is not mentioned is billiards. When my daddy died, all of us moved in with Aunt Irene, next door to Butch and his grandparents. My brother was a little country boy, didn't really know anyone. Aunt Irene put a billiards table in the basement. Butch and Bobby spent long hours trying to become pros. Both were competitive, but not sure if ever became pros. It did however lead to a lifetime friendship. Bobby is deceased, but his name still lovingly comes up when I see Butch. --Mary

Happy 50th Anniversary to Dr. Ronald (Butch) & Gayle Rogers

By Dr. Adam P. Rogers

A young man from Columbia and a young lady from Campbellsville met while lifeguarding at Green River Lake. They courted, became engaged, and eventually, on Friday, November 23, 1972, got married.

They moved to St. Louis so that Butch could attend Chiropractic school. While there, Gayle began working as a teller at a bank. This would foretell the beginning of two long careers.

After finishing school, they moved back to Columbia, to begin careers that would span over four decades. Gayle Rogers retired in 2019 after over 40 years at First & Farmers Bank, and Doc is still working to this day, 45 plus years later.
