Travel: Scenic Utah State Highway 128 Forty four miles of scenic driving along the Colorado river. By Robert Ellis The desired goal of our return trip to Utah was to finish visiting Utah's Mighty Five National Parks. Having seen two of the Five last year (Zion and Bryce Canyon) this trip would focus on South Eastern Utah. Much of our overnight lodging would be spent in Moab, but also a night in Monticello, Utah putting us closer to Canyonland (the Needles District) National Park and two nights in Green River, Utah...to visit Capital Reef National Park. Arches National Park was only a couple miles from Moab and we spent 2 days hiking and exploring many of the Arches there. Also included in this trip was a visit to Goblin Valley State Park, Utah (3600+ acres of mushroom shaped rock formations called goblins), Black Canyon National Park in Colorado and traveling the heights of Rim Rock Drive National Monument in Colorado. Note: We'll be posting photos from Robert's latest trip over the next week or so. Bookmark this page for more photos and links to other installments. --Pen 2022-10-28 12:10:11 | Comments | Printable version
Carol Perkins: Meatloaf Previous Column: You get what you pay for By Carol Perkins The music of Meatloaf has been transformed into a play entitled "Bat Out of Hell," which is one of his hits. (I hesitated to use that word.) Once in Las Vegas (last week's story), I scoured those Vegas magazines left in hotel rooms, looking for a show. Being a fan of Meatloaf (the singer), I wanted to see this musical. Guy did not, but as the famous Meatloaf hit goes, "I will do anything for love..." This rock n' roll show was all leather, motorcycles, and a spinoff of West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet. First chord by the band brought us out of our seats as if a gun had been fired. Shook the room. I glanced over to Guy who was looking at me. I patted his arm, "It'll get better." As the music/story progressed, I was in "hog heaven," tapping my feet and swaying to the beat. I glanced at Guy. He was looking up at the rafters, counting the lights attached to beams, or maybe praying for a quick end. Song after song from his greatest hits had a hold on the audience, but not on Guy. State voter registration continues surge Over 22,000 New Voters Register Since September 1 From Michon Lindstrom Frankfort, KY - Secretary of State Michael Adams announced that voter registration last month doubled August's surge, and remained strong this month through the October 11, 2022, registration deadline. From September 1 through October 11, Kentucky saw 22,613 new registrations, for a net gain of 16,467 voters. During that same period, 6,146 voters were removed from the rolls - 4,833 deceased voters, 745 voters convicted of felonies, 464 who moved out of state, 66 who voluntarily de-registered, 36 adjudged incompetent, and 2 duplicate registrations. "These are the strongest voter registration numbers since Fall 2020, when a record 2 million Kentuckians voted," said Adams. "With congressional, state legislative, judicial and local races on the ballot, plus two constitutional amendments, I hope this augurs strong participation in November." Sharing historic photos from Tupman collection Jimmy Tupman of Columbia shared some of his family collection of keepsake photographs. We were able to place each in good light and take smartphone pictures of them so they don't have to be carried away from their location. The photos linked to this article are from his father, Norris Tupman's, collection. One of the pictures we'll post is from the old Adair County News office when it used to be located in the corner of the Public Square. We are fortunate to have shared collections that show us life here in days gone by and Columbia Magazine welcomes them always. For details on how to send them, just click 'contact form' below and it will provide numbers to call or text. 2022-10-28 10:40:55 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History
