Trabue Russell House fall event features lunch and history

Mother Nature gave the supporters and volunteers of the Trabue Russell House in Columbia a perfect fall day for the annual chili-burgoo-and bean lunch on October 14, 2022.

This was held on the 201st anniversary of the home which was rescued and restored in the mid-1970s by the Adair Heritage Association and later given to the City of Columbia. For tours, contact the City at 270-384-2501.

For history of the builder Daniel Trabue, a book written by Vonnie Kolbenschlag is available at the Chamber of Commerce. Email coladair@duo-county.com .

Historic building on the square now has new owners

2022-10-20 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The historic Russell & Company building, also remembered as the Lerman's building, on the Public Square now has new owners, Dave and Tina Cook Thomas, of Hilltop Auto in Columbia. Pictured are Master Commissioner J. D. Zornes, at left, and Realtor Dale Hayes, at right, as regulations were read for those present for four property auctions Thursday. We look forward to hearing the dreams the Thomases have for the property which is such a dominant block of downtown.

Big Al Owens travels close to home at this writing

By Big Al Owens

I made my way downtown Thursday to pay the tax man and decided to stop off at Moore's Pool Room for lunch - one of the best darn cheeseburgers anywhere, deluxe - and a side of fries.

I ran into long time friends who were looking at all the improvements around the town square, especially the pool room which has been open in that location beside the theater since 1985.

Edmonton Mayor Smith remembers Tom Emberton, Sr.

A statement from Edmonton Mayor Doug Smith:
"Today Kentucky lost a great father, husband, friend, and statesman in a tragic accidental house fire. Tom heroically made certain his wife Julia made it to safety, but lost his life during his effort to save their home. Tom Emberton was a treasured son of Metcalfe County Kentucky, having served as a lawyer and chief judge of the Ky. Court of appeals. He was the Republican candidate for Governor in 1971.

He was a friend to many and always a champion of South Central Ky. His wisdom, kindness, and always sage advice was an encouragement to all. As a relative of Henry Clay, his ability to mediate and compromise came naturally, an attribute that would serve our country well at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Julia, his daughter Laura Emberton Owens and son Tom Emberton Jr. and the entire Emberton family."

Carol Perkins: You get what you pay for

Previous Column: See the World

By Carol Perkins

For twenty years, Guy has been going to Las Vegas for an Industrial Fastener Show and I have tagged along. We have had dinner with his (and now my) associates and friends. With Covid shutdowns, this is the first time in three years he has been and for the first time none of his associates are attending. Some have retired, some are not well, and some have left for different jobs.

In making plans for the trip, Guy could find no inexpensive flights. Usually, the cost was around $400 per person, but this time on Southwest, the price jumped to $600.

I assured him I could find something cheaper. That was my first mistake.

Quarles statement on passing of the Hon. Tom Emberton, Sr.

From Lisa Tolliver

Frankfort, KY - Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles issued the following statement upon learning about the passing of the Hon. Tom Emberton, Sr.:
"I'm saddened to learn about the passing of the Hon. Tom Emberton, Sr., who had a distinguished career as a public servant in the Commonwealth and was a gubernatorial candidate in 1971. Throughout his lifetime, he served his fellow man starting with a four-year tour of duty in the United States Air Force. After his military service, he found fulfillment serving his fellow Kentuckians in several political positions including as an executive assistant to Gov. Louie B. Nunn, and as a judge on the Kentucky Court of Appeals. His fellow judges elected him as Chief Judge on the Appeals Court, where he continued to serve with pride and dignity until his retirement. His leadership and thoughtfulness will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family."
