Discussion at Campbellsville University: A Legacy of Hope

By Gerard Flanagan

Campbellsville, KY - As the eighth child in a poor, sharecropping family that was "lost and unchurched," Wayne Dickard can recall many instances in his childhood where all hope seemed lost.

Then one day, a pastor visited the family to talk about Jesus Christ and invite them to church. He also prayed over them.

"That pastor shared with us the hope of the Gospel," he said during Campbellsville University's chapel service recently.

In the chapel service, Wayne and his son, Dr. Daniel Dickard, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Pastors' Conference, participated in a discussion on "A Legacy of Hope" along with Dr. Joseph Hopkins, 12th president of Campbellsville University, whose recent inauguration as the university's president revolved around that theme.

Kentucky agriculture celebrates Pork Month

From Lisa Tolliver

Frankfort, KY - With more than 860,000 swine produced annually in Kentucky, pork is an important product for the state's agriculture community. That importance is celebrated this month as Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles proclaims October as Pork Month in Kentucky.

"This month we celebrate our agriculture producers who work hard to raise pork, a healthy, lean meat," Commissioner Quarles said. "Pork plays an important role in our state. But more than anything, we celebrate the farmers that put in the work to bring us this valuable, nutritious commodity."

Kentucky pork sales make up 2.5 percent of total cash receipts for Kentucky agriculture. The sale of market hogs and pigs brought Kentucky farmers $170.24 million in 2021, up 33.3 percent from the previous year.

Gov. Beshear: KY launches new food safety reporting website

From Susan Dunlap

Frankfort, KY - On October 13, 2022, in keeping with his priorities to improve public health and safety in the commonwealth, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the launch of a new website - FoodSafetyReporting.ky.gov - where Kentuckians can easily report foodborne issues.

Until now, when someone suspected foodborne illness, it was reported to district or local health departments via phone, then a decision was made as to whether further investigation was needed. The new website allows for quick and easy reporting by consumers. The website also allows state public health officials to get the necessary information more efficiently, and in return, allows for quicker action to prevent others from becoming sick.

"Protecting the health and safety of our Kentucky families is my top priority," Gov. Beshear said. "With this new service, we will improve our ability to quickly help Kentuckians receive, analyze and respond to foodborne illness reports and identify foodborne outbreaks and prevent others from getting sick."

Volleyball: Battle of Highway 55 Thursday in Campbellsville

From Lindsey Athletics

The Battle of Highway 55 is moving north this week as Lindsey Wilson College and Campbellsville University are set to square off on the volleyball court for the second time this season and 59th time in the history of the two programs. Thursday's showdown at Gosser Gymnasium will include live stats and video and is scheduled to begin at 6pmCT.

Three weeks ago, inside Biggers Sports Center, the Tigers shocked the Blue Raiders with their first sweep in the series since 2012. Since then, the locals have orchestrated three consecutive victories, including most recently over the conference's last remaining unbeaten team, Thomas More University, on Saturday.

Campbellsville is 5-2 since its win against Lindsey Wilson back in September. One of those losses came at the hands of the Saints last Friday, revoking the Tigers' unblemished status versus Mid-South opponents.

Every caregiver needs a break - help is available

By Linda Waggener

At the Adair County monthly Caregivers meeting Wednesday the question came up as to how a lone caregiver can even take a break for the meeting. Sometimes the caregiver is the only one available. The group had answers for help, just click "comments" below this article and I can send contact information.

Respite is time off, time away, a much-needed time for a caregiver. It's relying on someone else, whether a friend, relative, volunteer or professional, who can fill in for you and give you some time to yourself -- because your wellness should be priority number one.

Don't wait until you become very depressed or very ill. Arrange it now for a few hours at least once a week.
