Carol Perkins: Sewing Teddy Bears for OCC

Previous Column: Operation Christmas Child

By Carol Perkins

I want to be crafty. I admire those who can whip up a teddy bear or a tote bag with their eyes shut. I notice on social media the fall projects others complete for their doors, porches, or fireplaces. I can sew, but I'm not crafty.

FAKH studies food insecurity among area residents

From Kaitlyn Jackson

The latest "Map the Meal Gap" data from Feeding America shows that 152,230 people in Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland's (FAKH) 42-county service area were food insecure in 2020.

Executive Director of FAKH, Jamie Sizemore, said the data is an important tool for the organization.

"The Map the Meal Gap study is one indicator we use when planning our programs and allocating resources," she said.

In recent years, FAKH has placed an enhanced emphasis on reaching under-resourced minority communities. While the overall food insecurity rate in Adair County is close to 15 percent (approximately one in seven), the food insecurity rate is 17 percent (approximately one in six) among Black residents.
