Lindsey Wilson College student enrollment tops 3K for 1st time

From Lindsey Wilson College

Lindsey Wilson College has experienced a record-setting start to the new academic year. The 119-year-old liberal arts college reached its largest-ever total enrollment with 3,097 students enrolled for fall 2022. This number is a 19% increase over the previous fall and exceeds LWC's prior enrollment record of more than 2,700 students set in 2020.

LWC has also achieved its highest-ever, first-year student retention rate. More than 70% of first-time LWC students decided to return to the College for a second year. That number represents a 6% increase over the previous record.

"We are incredibly pleased with enrollment this fall," said Vice President for Student Services and Enrollment Management Dean Adams. "We know from national trends there are fewer graduating high school seniors pursuing higher education and we also know that jobs are plentiful. So we are not only competing with other institutions but also with workforce opportunities."

Names may be strange things...

By Mike Watson

Robert Stone's haiku of Sunday, September 18, made me dredge up memories of old names; not of things, but of individuals.
Names are everything,
how sad we no longer give
lovely names to things.

--Robert Stone, Sunday, 18 September 2022.
In more than five decades of researching families of Adair and surrounding counties, I have encountered a few names that would be unusual in the world of today. Below is a list of some of the interesting ones, too long, perhaps, but worth a scan.

Almarine, Almira, America, Angenoma, Anguish, Araminta, Archaleus, Archilles, Ardina, Artamasa, Bailus, Berry, Breenberry, Buena Vista, Cager, California, Calista, Calphurnia, Ceany, Champness, Clementine, Cluff, Cyrenus, Darcus, Dicy, Docia, Doctor, Dominicus, Dorcas, Edmonia, Elcanah and Elcaney, Eliphalett, Elzey or Elza, Ermine, Eudosha, Exona, Ezekiel, ...list continues...

Expressway roadside clearing is a big help

By Vicky Pike

Major roadside mowing and clearing of overgrown trees getting too close to the Cumberland Expressway has been underway for the last few days.

It certainly has improved the looks as well as taken out trees that were hanging out near the roadway. Trees falling into the roadway have become a problem as the trees along the road are getting older and we have had several storms that have pushed trees closer to moving traffic.
